What are your biggest concerns with offshore development?

Any development in particular, oil, solar, tidal, mining, beach restoration, housing?

Many beaches communities don't want to see Windmills or Oil rigs in their sunrise/sunsets. Oil rigs obviously have the risk of leaks.

Since I am not anywhere near the shore or decent seafood my biggest concern would be the potential impact to the unlimited shrimp at Red Lobster.

You do know that Red Lobster's hush puppies aren't made with real puppies?

If the offshore development is the only way to do it (such as the only way to reach oil under deep water), then my biggest concern is if it is truly being done safely, responsibly, and without cutting corners. We don't want another Deepwater Horizon disaster.

If the offshore development is being done to get around onshore regulations, then my biggest concern is if the added costs and risks of the offshore development outweigh the gains vs just doing it onshore. This calculation should be done from the society's viewpoint, not the company's viewpoint, because the society generally faces the risks and the company generally faces the gains.

Yeah, that is probably the biggest thing I miss about being inland in that it is almost impossible to get good seafood.

I wouldn't know, they are just filler to keep you from eating more shrimp so they are ignored.

If you have your developers on boats in international waters, then, labor laws do not apply. You can get worse quality software which is hard to maintain and impossible to support.

Offshore development is not a long term option. Eventually your computers get shorted out by the sea water.

This will seriously mess with the "flush it if it floats" rule

The obvious ones: jobs. It takes jobs away. But also quality of work, and trust. Ex: if you are sending plans to build something, they now have your plans. Also in a lot of cases it's basically supporting slavery and terrible work conditions. I could not sleep at night if I knew my company was supporting that stuff while there are people here trying to find a job but can't.
