That doesn't make any sense.
These people commanded some 16-20 million votes each in their respective primaries this year.
Back when the party conventions chose candidates, you're talking about 2-3k delegates--at most--choosing each person. You really don't get more fringe than that.
Your argument simply doesn't hold up against math.

At least in the convention system you had delegations that represented the mainstream of each party in their respective states attending the conventions and participating in the deal making that ultimately produced a nominee.
