I just finished encoding a few cd's using EAC and the vorbis 1.0 encoder codec. I must say that the results are great, IMHO they sound much "cleaner that a lame mp3 with --alt -preset extreme. BTW, I'm using the quality setting of 8 for the .ogg files.

Wow, no replies for over a month.

Just jumped on the Ogg bandwagon myself. I'm no open-source evangelist, but Ogg is freaking awesome. Oddly enough, I am also using Quality setting 8 which is about 256kbps, but I've also did some tests using 160kbps and 128kbps on the same tracks. They all sound fantastic and all three are virtually indistinguishable from the original wav. I'm going to keep using 256kbps, but only because I've got 180gbs of storage

I hope that the Apple will add ogg support to their iPod soon, cause lord knows that I'm not going back. Lame is still a very good implementation of the mp3 codec, but I think ogg is the best lossy compression out there and it's only going to get better.

I heard an interview with the the ogg creator on CNET radio about a month ago. It definatly sounds like a better format than mp3. The only thing holding it back it useability. mp3 has become the standard. If more players will support the format then it has a better chance.

Remember that betamax has better quality than VHS.

But Betamax came out first so the analogy does not apply. Plus, the pornography market has little to do with the audio compression standards battle

At a quick glance it looks like the game Mafia uses the Vorbis codec.

From a "look it's getting some mainstream usage" angle.

Here's a question for the .ogg guys here. What encoder is considered the best of .ogg? LAME is generally considered the best for .mp3, but what about .ogg? I'm considering re ripping my collection to .ogg, because of the rave reviews.

I've been using OggDropXPd.

You can get it here:

http://www.vorbis.com/download_win.psp

Just look under encoders:

If you want Ogg software for something other than Windows, look here:

Yeah, Betamax lost, but now we've got DVD, so who cares about VHS? Honestly, there's no reason every audio player in the future won't be able to support Mp3 and Ogg. Lots of mp3 players also support wma, wav, and a host of other formats. Plus, I don't care what everyone else is using. I care that what I'm using sounds as good as it can, and Ogg is a terrible name but a fantastic encoder.

at 256kbps, MP3 and ogg are practically indistinguishable (at least on really good speakers, by me and a few of my friends)

Thanks for the links, I went off and made me some .ogg files with quality of 8 and 10 (don't like odd numbers, heh). With that in mind, I went to look up the Monkey's "loss less" compression and tried some files out. When I get back home today, I will go back and do some MP3s, with LAME at 320k. With ogg and mp3 at 320k, then monkey's, I'll get a good idea of what I want to recompress my audio to. With monkey, I know it will sound quite good, but I still want to save some space.

Even at the highest compression with monkey, the file sizes don't drop enough for me. I realize that monkey is trying to be the highest reproduction, but their sizes are still a bit too high for me. I'll go home, plug my headphones to the GXTP and compare a few tracks.
