A quick question regarding .ogg and .mp3.
I was wondering what would be better for me. I can either rip all my cd's with EAC/Lame at 192kbit/s or rip them with EAC and then encode them with OggDropXPd. Is there something better to encode them with? I'm not really sure what quality to encode them to.. What quality setting would make them around the same file size as an .mp3 at 192kbit/s? I'm getting a iRiver so I wanted to use .ogg.

Thanks in advance.

I like Ogg myself, I think it sounds better than most MP3s of equal bit rate. But my iRiver MP3 player doesn't list Ogg as supported, maybe the latest firmware changed that, but I haven't uploaded any oggs to it yet.

Ogg is better then Mp3's in most every respect. I record them at around 192...

The trouble with Ogg is if you have hardware media players, they may not support it.

Then again, if you use Ogg you can use the ingame music player for Ut2004 to play them.

Thanks guys, bump for anyone else.

Is OggdropXPd a good encoder for ogg files? Or is there something better. I found that at -q 5.5 its the same file size as a 192kbit/s mp3.

I use OggdropXPd myself. It's really easy to use and extremely lightweight, but I encode my music at -q 7. I dont know of any other software that will encode .WAV files to .OGG off the top of my head.

I should've stated this before, but OggdropXPd is just a frontend. The actual encoder is what is most important. Oggdrop definitely gets the encoding task done well though

I use EAC -> dbpoweramp to convert to 192kb ogg, you don't have to guess at filesize as it lists bitrate as you slide the quality bar.

Just an FYI, you will get reduced battery life with ogg files compared to mp3 on portable players because they are more processor intensive to decode. Eg. my Karma gets about 12-14 hours with mp3, but only about 8-10 with ogg. Also you should be able to reduce the file size to 160 or 128 with an ogg and get the same quality as 192 mp3. -q6 should be 192, I would suggest trying out -q5 (160 kbps) or -q4 (128 kbps) and seeing how they sounds to you if you are concerned at all with disk space.

I would suggest looking at the hydrogenaudio.com Ogg Vorbis forum for some recommended encoders and settings.

I like to encode music in .Ogg and .wma (sound quality is good), and .aac as well (compatible with the Apple iPod)
