O Brother O Where Art Thou is not based on The Oddysey. THat was just a joke. Neither of the Coen brothers even read the Odyssey, they just felt like putting that in there.

It does have Odyssey themes - the big thing being the Sirens who seduce them. Also Clooney's wife had a suitor and he was trying to get her back.

the blind oracle...the sirens...the savages in the jungle(KKK scene) how can you say that it wasn't based on the Odyssey?
when i wached it i kept tellin my roomie that it is alot like Homers The Odyssey and i didn't see the first 10 minutes of the movie. Then i watched it again cuz i thought it was so cool...

This is inaccurate, though it is true that they never read the epic poem. Ebert said:

The opening titles inform us that the Coen Brothers' &quot;O Brother, Where Art Thou?&quot; is based on Homer's The Odyssey. The Coens claimed their &quot;Fargo&quot; was based on a true story, but later confided it wasn't; this time they confess they haven't actually read The Odyssey. Still, they've absorbed the spirit. Like its inspiration, this movie is one darn thing after another.

Great Movie... If you want to take a break from the crap that's been coming out lately. Maybe I'm just weird but I thought From Dusk Till Dawn was Clooney at his best. Although the cool way he was always worried about his hair was great too.

Yea and his first name was Ulysses, which is a translation of Odysseus, the main character of the Odyssey Thats the ont I caught.
