The old law used to allow parents to “direct the child’s education and religious upbringing.” The new bill, however, amends such rights of the parents.

It now emphasizes a child’s “identity and allows parents only to “direct the child or young person’s education and upbringing, in accordance with the child’s or young person’s creed, community identity and cultural identity.”

Fact is kids know who they are since they are very young and it doesn't change. Beating and stuff just reinforces them to be who they are. Only the weak give in or kill themselves and that's a whole other issue.. It is in Ontario only, not all of Canada. Also it prevents stupid parents from ruining their children by attempting to make them straight. Aside from not being able to beat the gay out of your own children, here's another reason why conservatives are opposed:

Jack Fonseca, a political strategist for Campaign Life Coalition, criticized the new law: “With the passage of Bill 89, we’ve entered an era of totalitarian power by the state, such as never witnessed before in Canada’s history… Bill 89 is a grave threat to Christians and all people of faith who have children, or who hope to grow their family through adoption.”

Here we go with religion again. You would think that if an LGBT kid is available, and you're a bigot, you would just stick your nose in the air and refuse that kid. Evidently not. So in order to protect these children from being abused by those looking to "fix" them, they have to make stupid laws like this.

Just my humble opinion here--but I think any law specifically trying to enforce/protect a minor's right to identify with the gender of their choosing against their parents' wishes is a bad idea. There are some obvious situations where you would want to protect foster kids or prevent/reverse an adoption, but I think it's stupid to take kids away from birth parents except for cases of proven physical or emotional abuse--in which case there are existing laws to protect children.

Kids may already be aware of their identity/preferences pre-puberty, and it's great if parents can acknowledge that, but you still need to go through puberty and all the requisite physical, mental, and hormonal "growing up" before you decide you want to change.

Ughh, that's f**king horrible--I hope that father paid a price. But, as I mentioned, wouldn't existing laws punish the parent and protect the child? I can't imagine that any court would review this case and conclude "wow, that assault was harsh, but maybe his kid shouldn't have been gay..." Assault is assault, period.

edit: I know that the problem with any parental abuse of a minor is that the onus is on the child or another adult to actually report the abuse to doctors, police, or child protective services, so a lot of abuse goes unnoticed. But I don't see how another law will solve that.

Those that rush to remove a child from a home ought to have a lot more awareness of the environment the child is likely to go into. Often a shitty or even frankly abusive parent whom you have some sort of positive/ambivalent attachment to is better than being passed around from foster parent to foster parent. I wish it were so easy as to raise healthy children by simply providing for them their physical needs, an education, and freedom from terror. Even that is hard to provide, but nonetheless a home where you are not loved and valued is insufficient. And providing these things for someone whose early development has been screwed does not magically make them function.
