@Zorba: from what I've read, there are a large group who express dissatisfaction with gender
roles, and a smaller group who outright say, at like age 5, "Mommy, put me back inside you so I can come out a girl this time."
The problem is, the studies the Reich-wingers usually cite when they want to crow about "Hurr hurr 80% desistance rate"
do not separate these two. There is a tremendous difference between "Being a girl sucks, I wanna drive a truck when I'm older!" and a 4 year old trying to rip his own penis off in the shower because it feels like an alien appendage.
Again, I have to take trans* people at their word for this, but so far
every single one I've known showed massive, permanent, and immediate improvement of their mental state when they began transition in earnest.
This means, and pay special attention here

if trans* people are actually mentally ill,
the most efficacious therapy is to bring their bodies in line with their minds. In other words, your supposed concern for their mental health is a smokescreen to hide the fact that you're letting your own personal "icks" get in the way of these peoples'
actual mental health. Meaning you don't actually care for their well-being; you just don't want those icky icky queers near you.
And if you think it isn't obvious to anyone with 3 sparking neurons to rub together and even a tiny bit of basic human decency that this is what you're doing, you're insulting everyone else's intelligence.
