Depending on how much adrenaline your body can produce him hitting you may only make you angrier and stronger, so I say you're way past due to confront this dude already. You can still be knocked out though so just be smart and time your strikes; let him make the first move then ruin him.

If he is alcoholic and abusive, then his family probably doesn't like him very much and they probably love his estranged wife.

Since he was banging his wife the husband figured he was fair game so he is currently receiving some sweet sweet non-consensual man loving which the husband knows he won't report to the police out of shame. He may or may not return to this thread depending on how fast he can repress the memory, no fewer than a few weeks because he will be reminded by the pain everytime he sits down, but will not admit to the above man loving.
