Not saying WoW is evil or anything like that, just saying personally to ME that type of game seems like the most boring thing ever devised. The problem I have is the amount of time it requires to be good, its not necessarily your skill at the game as much as your lack of a life that determines how quickly you can level up or gain items or whatever.
If games dont appeal to you at first sight, the chances are low that they would grow on you with time. Good thing you seem to know which one to avoid for yourself. Me, I never played WoW and probably wont play it for other reasons. But do keep in mind some games let you build your own characters your own way and you get to see not only how masterful someone is at wielding a specific type of weapon, but also get to prove whether your strategy/build works or not. Even with FPS, you have some mods that let you gain levels and buy abilities. Not everyone has the exact same weapon of choice, and I would figure the same logic applies here, or else everyone would/should just use the same weapon to make the playing field more even. It is just all about the different level of emphasis on various aspects different genres have.
Besides, there are many FPS players that take pride in their "reputation" or name, clan, whatever... Something from which they could gain some sense of achievement or progress over time. Again, other genres just tend to have stronger emphasis on those elements. To put it in a different perspective, modding a car is a hobby in itself, not necessarily a strict labor just to let you into the street racing arena. Rather, it may well be more of having another toy that you get gratification from just by having it in possession, even without putting it to a good use.
