Okay, so I'm an intern at a pretty big company (GE), and since I'm so young (19) the only reason I have the internship is because my freind's dad is one of the executives for the company. So, we work at the same jobsite, except he works in the big tall building with the executives, and I have a cube in one of the factories.

Anyway, I dont really do much, so sometimes I cut out of work a few hours early. Yesterday was no different, however mr executive calls me to have lunch, but I was out of my office (left about 1.5 hours early). So, last night I get a call from him at home, and he says "So John, do you know what happens when the sixth floor calls and you dont call back?" At first I dont get this because there is no 6th floor in my building, but apparently the 6th floor is where all the important people have their big offices, and I would have been in deep sh!t if it wasn't him. Basically it took me a second to figure out he called, and I'm like *whoops* and made up some bs excuse for leaving early.

Now I have lunch with him in about an hour, and I feel like I'm going to the principal's office or something. Oh well, at least its a free lunch!

people high up in these kind of places tend to be really nice and friendly.

I worked on wall street this summer and had a lunch with one of the managing directors (base sallary ~600K + x2 the bonus). Really nice, bright guy with a lot of insight into the business. I really enjoyed talking to him.

I see you already are prepping yourself for large corporation mentality. GM is full of people like you

guys like him are crazy though, who really wants to work 12+ hours a day, spend their life in a constant state of jetlag, and rarely see their family?

I mean, his family is *slightly* fvcked up, just goes to show that money cant fix all your problems...

It's the same mentality. It's unfortunate that many US corporations are heading this way.

You're a moron and deserved to be fired.

I have sent him a link to this thread.

Good luck.

The company I work for has a lot of contracts with GE, and it sucks to say the least. GE's applications are totally outdated, their servers are always down, their IT department is slow as balls, and the helpdesk is located in India. nuff said. for GE.

Whats beyond me is why I was hired in the first place (and all interns in general). Either they really dont need me (hence the lack of work) or my supervisor is too stupid to delegate. The fact is that I'm not the only person in this boat, so having interns must do something good for the company.

General Management?

or she specifically meant GE

i'm a contractor for GE and even though it's in a financial branch... it's sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much more laid back than other gigs i've had working in financial buildings.

ING, as a whole, were some of the most uptight assholes i've ever seen. which is effing insane considering the N stands for Netherlands. when i found that out... i thought there would surely be complementary bongs and flowers... or they'd at LEAST not be super conservative about appearance, etc.

See, that's the difference between a business executive and a business man.
And when I say business man, i mean business, man
For the record I'm not a business man, i'm a business, man

So show some initiative - find/make something to do. This is a resume building opportunity, don't blow it.

There are few enough opportunities in your career that you have enough time left over after the "has to get done" stuff is finished to take the initiative and stand out.

Why are you leaving early all the time? That's not good initiative, especially from an intern. :|

So you could have grabbed this opportunity and made the most of it, but instead you're only interested in doing the least amount possible so you can leave early.

No wonder I can't find quality people to hire. I see this all the time.

You should tell him his wife insisted you leave a few hours early so she can have you to herself before *he* got home.

The movie, Office Space, comes to mind. The main actor did quite well doing just that.

Now's his big chance. Go to lunch, explain that you have nothing to do, ever, and ask the guy to move you to a more challenging position. This could work out in your favor if you play it right.
