Earlier today I installed a second hard drive (not identical to my first one) and everything was fine for a few hoours

Then a second ago I got a blue screen telling me there was an unexpected error and my pc was going to shut down to prevent damage. I did some googling- "blue screen of death" freaked me out slightly.

Anyway, the blue screen told me to uninstall all new hardware. So ive taken then hard drive out and everything looks ok now.

My question is did I install the hard drive wrong? I need more space but I'm scared to install a new one now :/

Do you have smart enabled in the BIOS? You are going to need to put the drive back in and do some testing to see if something is wrong with the hard drive. If it's a SATA drive, it's highly doubtful you could wire it wrong. If it worked fine at first, you didn't install it wrong.

Try it again in a different SATA connector. Many boards have two different sets of SATA ports, each set associated with a different controller. Also, try a different SATA cable. Most of them are cheap pieces of crap, in my experience. Defective drives do occur, however, and it shouldn't be too much of a shock when you run into one. Assuming you have the receipt, you should be able to swap it for a new one.

Oh I'm not actually sure- I'll double check that now. Yes it is a SATA drive. Oh god, I'm slightly terrified of putting it back in :L

I just built a RAID5 array you are only starting to learn

Thanks- I'll give this a try next

Unfortunately not- I took it out of my old PC so the receipt is long gone!

Sent PM suggesting you re-seat cables and make sure it's connected to Intel SATA port and other info.

Just checked and your motherboard has 3 SATA controllers. One is the Asmedia. It's navy blue. I wouldn't use it The others are Intel. They are blue and grey. The blue SATA ports are 3.0 Gb/s. The grey is 6.0 Gb/s. Commonly referred to as SATA II and SATA III.Try each Intel port. Could be a bad port or that HDD may prefer SATA II or SATA III or vice versa.
