Oh man, this sounds so perfect!

Background:
My family has a 15 year old Arab gelding and a great barn/pasture setup but we have TWO 10 year old girls who love to ride (not to mention my mom.) The twins are wonderful with the horse and are perpetually purusing any sites with horses for sale and/or adoption and picking out the horses they like - that are inevitably $3k or unbroken or have health problems, all of which puts them out of my family's limited budget.

So I just tripped across this on craigslist randomly:

Well Trained Show Horse for Free Lease
Beautiful, well trained, sound, 15year old 15.2hh Arabian mare for free lease. She is trained Western but can be ridden english as she has lovely extended gaits when asked. She is not spooky at all but is spirited so an intermediate or advanced rider would be preferred. She loves to be ridden in an arena and I like to trail ride so I would like to place her in a home with someone taking lessons,4-H or pony club home. She is perfect for a kid moving up to seniors or outgrowing a pony or an adult looking for a quality ride. This is a very nice "A" system quality mare but dumped at the auction with no papers so is unable to show in Breed shows. She needs a stall with turnout. She would not be happy in a pasture with no stall. Please e-mail for more info or pictures. I would consider selling her to the right approved home.

It was posted today - I just emailed the poster and crossed my fingers. It would be so perfect - the horses are about the same level of difficult and they're nearly the same height and it sounds like this owner is looking for exactly what my family could offer.

My little sisters would be SO thrilled to have a second horse to work with.

They hand the horse over for free (which saves $$$ in buying or paying a lease), you pay for the horse's keep, they pay for any vet bills, and they can reclaim their horse at any point.

It's a good solution for a horse person who can't afford to keep the horse month to month but doesn't want to sell.

Well, the other side of the coin is you basically get a free horse to use and you pay only keep, which isn't much if you have the layout already. Paying for feed and doing cleanup is very minor compared with shelling out $1-7k up front and assuming the cost of any potential vet bills.

Ah, horses are cool .

I especially like the smart horses that only poop in the corner of their stalls, and make a nice big convenient pile.

But some horses just aren't satisfied until the entire stall floor is covered in poop nuggets.

I'm a city boy, and I always thought that people who liked horses and wanted to take care of them were crazy, hicks, or wannabe cowboys. After I started doing the stall work, they're not so bad, and I can see what people like about them. Their poop doesn't even stink! (That bad). (And the pay's good).

I totally agree with the Viper comment. He needs his rear handed to him for a week.
