Most of the male userbase were probably single losers looking for hookups with any breathing female that would write them back.

Yet another reason this "outing" doesn't mean much.

Ha, we'll see. I read there were a ton of .mil and .gov addresses. That should provide at least a little entertainment.

Wat? 40 million members?

I wonder how many are fake accounts. If 70-80% of the registered userbase is American, how many married couples are there in the United States? Around 50-60 million? If so, it would be the majority that signed up if no fake accounts.

What is Snowden treated like a hero in some circles?

He certainly illegally accessed a system and released its information playing the moral authority card and didn't go through proper channels.

The person who many commentators have cited as a proper whistle-blower on cable news networks (in order to slam Snowden by comparison) himself has stated that in today's environment it's far harder to be a whistle-blower today than it was in the past.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/opin...46d96c-e5b7-11e2-aef3-339619eab080_story.html

Many people compare Edward Snowden to me unfavorably for leaving the country and seeking asylum, rather than facing trial as I did. I don’t agree. The country I stayed in was a different America, a long time ago.

After the New York Times had been enjoined from publishing the Pentagon Papers — on June 15, 1971, the first prior restraint on a newspaper in U.S. history — and I had given another copy to The Post (which would also be enjoined), I went underground with my wife, Patricia, for 13 days. My purpose (quite like Snowden’s in flying to Hong Kong) was to elude surveillance while I was arranging — with the crucial help of a number of others, still unknown to the FBI — to distribute the Pentagon Papers sequentially to 17 other newspapers, in the face of two more injunctions. The last three days of that period was in defiance of an arrest order: I was, like Snowden now, a “fugitive from justice.”

~snip~

But for the whole two years I was under indictment, I was free to speak to the media and at rallies and public lectures. I was, after all, part of a movement against an ongoing war. Helping to end that war was my preeminent concern. I couldn’t have done that abroad, and leaving the country never entered my mind.

There is no chance that experience could be reproduced today, let alone that a trial could be terminated by the revelation of White House actions against a defendant that were clearly criminal in Richard Nixon’s era — and figured in his resignation in the face of impeachment — but are today all regarded as legal.

Perhaps if the immoral torture regime used against some U.S. prisoners (including solitary confinement) wasn't in place Edward Snowden would have surrendered to U.S. authorities instead of fleeing the country.

Even the NSA had internal doubts about the efficacy of the spying program that Snowden leaked details of.

http://www.engadget.com/2015/03/29/nsa-mulled-scrapping-bulk-phone-surveillance/
The National Security Agency may present a united front when it defends against criticism of its bulk phone data collection, but it's now clear that there has been at least some doubt within the ranks. Associated Press sources have revealed that there was an internal proposal to kill the phone surveillance program in early 2013, not long before Edward Snowden's leaks made it public. Reportedly, some NSA officials were concerned that the initiative was not only expensive to run, but ineffective. It wasn't "central" to catching terrorist plots, and it wasn't capturing most cellphone calls. Not surprisingly, the critics were also worried about outrage if the truth came out -- which, of course, is exactly what happened.

If the U.S. hadn't lost sight of the guidance set in place by the first President of the United States then this country would be in a better place in terms of domestic and foreign policy and in terms of a moral example for the rest of the world.

And perhaps Mr. Snowden would be an unknown person.

Back on topic. It's not as entertaining as looking at nekkid phone pics of celebs but finding out with public self-appointed bastions of moral authority end up being outed as customers of Ashley Madison will still be interesting.

Another 20GB of data dumped? Awesome.

That being said, how has nobody set up a searchable website yet? I want to search for some names and addresses I know!

There were yesterday. Apparently they crashed due to traffic. No idea if it's been fixed.

I sill think legalized prostitution in the USA would do wonders for the, er, economy.

http://newsroom.ucla.edu/releases/decriminalizing-prostitution-linked-to-fewer-stds-and-rapes

When the Rhode Island legislature inadvertently decriminalized indoor prostitution in the state from 2003 to 2009, it proved beneficial to UCLA public policy professor Manisha Shah.

Shah and her co-author Scott Cunningham of Baylor University examined data from that period, becoming the first social scientists to evaluate the decriminalization of prostitution using a natural experiment.

Interesting read imo.

And to look at the pics/movies of course. Disappointing. Good thing I didnt go looking straight for the porn and download all these big files.

I glimpsed over this at first because I was like "so some celebrity’s site got hacked, why is this news?" but did not realize what this was till went to the site and saw what it was. This is hilarious.

I don't really feel bad for anyone affected, it's not like it's a regular dating site or a government site or something else where the average joe would have an account with.

I'm going to open an online divorce firm, there is going to be a boom in business I think.

Ashley Madison is facing huge class action lawsuit

Ashley Madison is facing a C$760m ($576m; £367m) class-action lawsuit after customer data from the infidelity dating website was leaked onto the so-called dark web last week.

Two Canadian firms - Charney Lawyers and Sutts, Strosberg LLP - are bringing the action against Avid Dating Life and Avid Media, which run the site.

They said they were acting on behalf on "all Canadians" affected by the breach.

Hackers, known as the Impact Team, stole the data last month.

It included users' names, email and home addresses, and message history. The hackers threatened at the time to reveal the information unless the site was taken down.

"Numerous former users of AshleyMadison.com have approached the law firms to inquire about their privacy rights under Canadian law," the two firms said in a statement.

What? People signed up to such a site with their military and gov work email address?

Has to be a joke, anyone silly enough to do that get's fired on the spot simply because they have the IQ of a 6 year old for not using some throw away free email.

They were providing a service people wanted. From what I understand, they had better than industry average security measures. So not their fault they got hacked. But taking money for something and not doing it (deleting data), well they deserve whatever comes their way for that.

Wouldn't most guys/girls that want to cheat use an alternative email address when they sign up? I mean it's common sense.
