Wouldn't most guys/girls that want to cheat use an alternative email address when they sign up? I mean it's common sense.

Even if they used an alternate email...my understanding is this is a paid site, especially to use a lot of its functionality. The leaked info included a lot of credit card names. Josh Duggar was pointed out just so. I'm not certain, I've never used it.

When I was in South Korea I met many Koreans who cheated on their spouses.

They all took "business trips" to Thailand at least once every 3 months.

IMO, men grow tired of their spouses. They want to meet other people, but you can't have it both ways. Cheaters should either sek help, or they should stay single.

There are reports of a couple of suicides over the hack.

There are also a couple of confirmed cases of extortion

Evans also said that a new scam, claiming to erase names from the Ashley Madison database in order to preserve users’ privacy, had sprung up in the few days since the hack.

“By clicking on these links, you are exposing your computer to adware, spyware, malware and viruses,” Evans said. “Multiple sites have now downloaded [the Ashley Madison user database] and are present. Nobody is going to be able to erase that information. There are confirmed cases of people trying to extort Ashley Madison clients.”

I wonder if the suicides sprang from the subsequent extortion.

They were providing a service people wanted. From what I understand, they had better than industry average security measures. So not their fault they got hacked. But taking money for something and not doing it (deleting data), well they deserve whatever comes their way for that.

their security from what I have read was really terrible

the part of this that stinks is the releasing of the CC stuff as well

why do that?

Yup, or at least their handling of it was terrible. When the hackers started making threats it seems like they already had the info, AM plugging the holes after the fact wouldn't have done anything. Scrapping and relaunching the sites probably would've worked better in hindsight.

Probably the same reason the database was dumped in the first place: moral high ground. Impact Team wanted to out anyone using the site as a philanderer without the benefit of hiding behind a nondescript email address or alias.

Ashley Madison is claiming that complete credit card numbers weren't stored/released...probably just the last four digits. Just enough to verify identity.

There is no moral high ground here, but I agree with you on the rest

Not sure if this has been posted yet, but apparently Ashley Madison's CEO tried to hack a competing company in 2012. Maybe this is payback?

Alternative email sites may not be allowed through proxy servers that connect government networks to the internet. If people want to do this at work so their spouse doesn't find it on their home computer they may have to use their work email because that's the only one they can get to at work.

Doing personal stuff at work is already questionable especially if you are in certain regulated industries.

Now throw on the fact that you're not just logging into your Gmail account but you're signing up and using a site that could likely get you into legal trouble (divorce battles) and screw your whole personal and possibly professional life up. Sounds smart to take SOME precautions. Go do it on your phone maybe? And surely no one is monitored 24/7 by their spouses that they can't find SOME time in their lives to sign up for a site like this. If you're willing to devote time and energy to hide a secret lover, can't you figure out how to sign up for a site secretively?

I wasn't saying there was, either. That's just how the hackers rationalized it.

I won't shed a tear if Ashley Madison goes under. I can think of several other courses I'd go before resorting to an affair personals site, but I think loyalty and honesty is undervalued these days.

The collateral is going to be too destructive to an amount of people that didn't deserve this. I don't applaud the hackers. But by and large, for those who used the site for its intended purpose...I'm having a hard time finding regret for it. Not like my giving a crap will change what happens.

http://arstechnica.com/security/201...hley-madison-passwords-could-take-a-lifetime/

Found this really interesting. While password hashes were part of the leak since they were both salted and encrypted with bcrypt the possibility of actually cracking them to find the real password is extremely low and takes an extreme amount of time even with powerful and specialized equipment. Due to AM employing these methods one of the specialists attempting to reveal the true passwords was limited to 156 guesses per second instead of the 7m-11m that would be possible with more common, weaker methods of hashing such as MD5 or SHA1. Kind of a tertiary concern given the nature of this breach (where it's more about simple membership than anything else) but I thought it interesting how effective the hashing could be at protecting the passwords even when exposed and freely attacked.

There were only 3 ZIP codes in America without any Ashley Madison accounts — here they are:

  1. Nikolai, Alaska (99691) — Population: 94 (2010 Census)
  2. Perryville, Alaska (99648) — Population: 113 (2010 Census)
  3. Polvadera, New Mexico (87828) — Population: 269 (2010 Census)
