Welcome to 2015. Due to the corruption of our political system we don't trust our laws nor our lawmakers because they accept bribes from "citizens" (aka companies) in the form of donations. We don't trust the police nor the judicial system, because the more expensive your lawyer is the more you can get away with and the color of your skin changes how you are treated. We don't trust the bureaucracy because they demand to spy on us up to and including illegal hacking. We don't even trust the privacy of our friends and family, because you shouldn't have anything to hide. There is no higher authority anymore, and there hasn't been since our fragile mental bubbles were popped on 9/11.

Ever since then we have embraced the vigilante as the sole means to deliver justice to those who use power to insulate themselves from justice, whether metaphorically in popular comic book movies or in reality via people like Edward Snowden, Assange or whoever we feel is fighting the fight we want to see. TV Shows like Mr. Robot glorify the hacker, and equivocate them to be a digitized Batman.

In 2015 it is the age of the vigilante, and we can't get enough of it even when it is unwarranted or illegal. Your father's society is dead, from head to toe.
Some good points.

SIRI, display only cock'n'ball torture and watersports destinations
SIRI, give directions to nearest location
+1

Married man wants discrete couple for adventurous watersports, B&D, S&M, scat, adult baby play, and extreme humiliation. No smokers!

What is Snowden treated like a hero in some circles?

He certainly illegally accessed a system and released its information playing the moral authority card and didn't go through proper channels.
I think poofyhairguy pretty much nailed it. In a society with little or no moral authority we take what we can get. Often, the best we can do is some not-so-nice people doing illegal things to reveal/punish bad people.

I'm surprised none of the site's users offered to pay the hacker's extortion demands directly

Pffffhahaha You can't be serious.

First of all, you seem to think everyone has access to the same information you do and will process that information in the same way. This is incorrect.

Secondly you seem to think that Ashley Madison's clientèle actually care. Most of them probably don't.

Thirdly you think that if they did find out, they would suddenly stop using the service. They won't. Their minds do not operate that way. Neither does yours btw. This is not an insult directed at you or anyone else just an observation that people overestimate their pre-frontal cortex's control over their actions.

Ever wonder why a long time cigarette smoker continues to smoke even after learning how bad it is for their health? I don't.

Fouthly there is a new sucker born every minute. Even if AM's current customers did flee en masse they will obtain new nob headed noobs in short order.

I'm making a prediction that if Ashley Madison shuts down it will only be because the company decided to for whatever reason. It won't be from loss of customers though. My other prediction is in the off chance they do shut it down they will just start another one with a different name.
I agree with him. AM will never recover from this blow.

This is going to have long-term consequences for many involved, and possibly all of us; any leader who is in a position in the future regarding privacy of data on the internet and was caught in this thing's huge net is now quite burned by the fact and will influence decision (corporate, legislative, etc.) accordingly.

It's possible this will turn into a good thing in ways some aren't considering. I've long thought people share too much online, and what you don't control yourself directly somebody else does, and it can come back to bite you later. A vengeful ex-lover, co-worker, or even somebody on a message forum can burn you (or if you used the same email at a site with a moderator who doesn't like you--oops!).

This guy sounds awesome.

So he molested 4 of his sisters and now this.
Wow. I presume I know people who are on this, given the huge number of participants.

The only recourse is to own up to it immediately and/or play it down as just "a joke" (like your wife will buy that), or deny and bluff like your life depends on it because in some ways it does.

I've seen a few online say that people could have been trolled by having their address put on there, but unless said troll knew this hack was coming it's a weak point.

I actually saw a link on forbes a moment ago but didn't click it--linked to the TOR location and a torrent. This data will never go away, it's there forever.

My impression of some basic searches is that there are a few sites up now that will let you search an individual email address, such as: https://ashley.cynic.al/ or https://haveibeenpwned.com/. That first site's creator's twitter says he will ignore any DMCA take down requests, which is the reason another site I saw a link to said it had already had to come down. I guess AM is trying to plug the leaks but it never will be able to.

This site seems wicked shady: http://www.trustify.info/. Plug in @gmail.com and it will say you were compromised and you can give them all your details and they will call you. Pretty dumb to do that.

BWAHAHA! He paid for the Guaranteed Affair package. I'm sure some guys will get away with "I-I was just curious honey. I heard about it on the radio and wanted to see what it was." excuse, but that's pretty hard to pull off when you drop $250 on the guaranteed affair package.

So immoral people get outed and stupid people learn about the Internet and proverbs about a fool and his money. Win-win!

A "verified" former Ashley Madison employee did an AMA on Reddit recently. She said this site had the typical online dating website skew for male-female users.

Here's that AMA:

https://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comme...t_ashley_madison_from_20082013_ama/?limit=500

Haha I couldn't tell you the exact ratio but you're probably close. We had WAY more men than women. The men on the site were exactly what you'd expect - horny, middle aged, sexually deprived and willing to do/pay anything for the affair of a lifetime. Poor guys, I always felt bad for them. The legitimate women on the site (we like every dating site had a huge problem with fraud/scammers/cam girls) were mostly single, looking for older married men. Lots of women looking for sugar daddies. We also got a lot of couples, looking to add a third person or another couple to their mix. As the site became more and more popular, I saw a lot more married woman making their way to us but they were far more careful than the men. The men would join, post a picture of their dick and then call two hours later screaming "why has no one messaged me?!?!?!" The delusion was off the charts. I had to explain at least five times a day that sending women pictures of your dick is literally the WORST first impression you can make. 9 times out of 10 they still didn't get it and would just go upload MORE dick pics
I'm guessing most of the people who signed up got nothing out of it but lost income. And now they risk being exposed on top of that. Sad. Not that I feel too sorry for people who want to cheat on their significant others.

If the leaks do happen I somehow don't see many rushing to defend the predominantly male userbase from "slut shaming"

Most of the male userbase were probably single losers looking for hookups with any breathing female that would write them back.

Yet another reason this "outing" doesn't mean much.

I think I heard earlier on the TV news that this info was "only" available on the Dark Web... I'm sure someone's done a CTRL+C and CTRL+V by this point onto regular interwebs.

P.S. Just remembered that the Fappening happened around this time last year.

If these people had used bitcoin instead of credit cards, then they wouldn't have had their real identity leaked like this.

instead they could have had their bit coin wallet stolen because they used a web wallet when their friend sent them bit coins back when they were 17c each: THATS HOW YOU GET FUCKED ON THE INTERNET

Technically they were worth a few dollars at that time, but yes it is unfortunate about what happened.

1) No one uses bitcoin

2) You'd still have you personal info including a PICTURE in your profile. That's how dating sites work.

No offense, but you don't know shit about business. Common sense tells me that a company who specializes in connecting clients with people who cheat on their spouse and then has all their personal information stolen, including sex orientated chats will not survive.

Perhaps a new company will rise from the ashes, but this company is done for. Just a hunch. :sneaky:
