It's WAY more complicated than English and Americanese, it's a mix between three languages in words and pronounciation.
If you ever took German in school you'd have as much luck at understanding them as you would if they spoke keltic.
For me it is actually easier to understand/speak Austrian than most of the German dialects you hear in Germany (rural Bavarian is nearly impossible; although I can usually get by if I am in e.g. Munich), but that is mainly because I am Swedish and most of the sounds used Austrian prononuciation exist in Swedish as well (I studied German for 6 years in school, including a few months at University; although I've forgotten much of it by now)
Also, the one shouldn't exagerate the differences. They are large enough to be easily recognizable; but the "offical" differences (what you find in dictionataries) are relatively minor, especially in writing.
If you understand/speak German you can get by in both Germany and Austria. Switzerland is bit trickier (I find spoken Schwyzerdütsch to be VERY difficult to understand).
But I agree that the differences are larger than between American and British English, I used that example just because the differences between the two (spelling, certain words etc) are presumably well know to someone from the US.

Come on guys. This isn't about her misplacing a decimal point, it's about her trying to use that information to say that CO2 shouldn't be considered a pollutant.
I would have to say that if you want to find evidence for Michelle Bachman being a mouth breathing simpleton, there are far better quotes however. She's an amazing gift to the Democratic party.

It also produces some killer gas.
Not so nice if you are in a windshield but it would probably be worse if i turned my bum towards the fire.
But my point stands, sodas are useless, Guinness is the beverage of the gods.
