It's pretty ironic to have an intelligent discussion in a thread about Michelle Bachmann, isn't it? Of necessity, the intelligent discussion is off-topic.

The earth would be a much better place without any carbon dioxide.

If you ever took German in school you'd have as much luck at understanding them as you would if they spoke keltic.

For me it is actually easier to understand/speak Austrian than most of the German dialects you hear in Germany (rural Bavarian is nearly impossible; although I can usually get by if I am in e.g. Munich), but that is mainly because I am Swedish and most of the sounds used Austrian prononuciation exist in Swedish as well (I studied German for 6 years in school, including a few months at University; although I've forgotten much of it by now)

Also, the one shouldn't exagerate the differences. They are large enough to be easily recognizable; but the "offical" differences (what you find in dictionataries) are relatively minor, especially in writing.
If you understand/speak German you can get by in both Germany and Austria. Switzerland is bit trickier (I find spoken Schwyzerdütsch to be VERY difficult to understand).

But I agree that the differences are larger than between American and British English, I used that example just because the differences between the two (spelling, certain words etc) are presumably well know to someone from the US.

Strange, for me it's impossible to understand most Austrian dialects but i have no problem with most German dialects otherwise.

It's been almost a year since i was there now but i distinctly remember having to find English speaking people because i didn't understand their "language" or "dialect" at all.

BTW, did you get rid of the polar bears in Stockholm?

I'll leave writing the shitty songs to you. I only write good ones. :music:

Is water vapor harmful?

It is if you inhale enough of it, especially while you're hitting that pipe.

Come on guys. This isn't about her misplacing a decimal point, it's about her trying to use that information to say that CO2 shouldn't be considered a pollutant.

I would have to say that if you want to find evidence for Michelle Bachman being a mouth breathing simpleton, there are far better quotes however. She's an amazing gift to the Democratic party.

It also produces some killer gas.

Not so nice if you are in a windshield but it would probably be worse if i turned my bum towards the fire.

But my point stands, sodas are useless, Guinness is the beverage of the gods.

"Natural" this and that - black mamba venom is perfectly natural, as is the toxin found on the skin of a poison arrow frog. They'll both kill you just fine though.

"Natural" is possibly the most misused term in recent memory. People have been made to believe it is synonymous with good.

Road apples are natural, but I wouldn't want them in my "all natural" granola bar, even if they didn't kill me. (I just picture "road apple and raisin", the new, all natural flavor snack, and cringe.)

Uh oh... let's hope you don't figure out how to play the pre-made tracks on your $20 synthesizer, otherwise Harvey is gonna be out of business!

LOL! Well, you wanted a shitty one, and that qualifies. Harvey is a pro wordsmith and would create something an order or three of magnitude better.

I find it rather pathetic that "rightwingers" would rather defend Bachmann's moronic statements, even after knowing the context in which they were delivered - instead of saying "yeah, gosh, that was kind of stupid...."

Really rural Bavarian is nearly impossible for other Germans to understand -- the combo of heavy accent and idioms is killer. The mild Bavarian dialect of Munich is no problem. It seems as you go further South in German speaking lands the accent gets broader and far less harsh. SwissDeutch sounded like German with a lilting accent akin to the American South to me, quite nice to ear, actually.
