I just heard a newbie (1st week on the actual call floor taking his own calls in the "Newbie School" that we call "Academy") tell a customer that the customer needed to go call Microsoft (which he'll be charged $35, btw) because he couldn't release his IP address. Is that a bad thing? No. The bad thing comes in when he's looking at a customer who's set dynamic with the IP address of 0.0.0.0.

:Q :frown: :disgust: :|

What the hell!? Where do they get these people?????

... wait a second... I was there too when I was young. --shoot, this guy's in his 40's. Nevermind.

My 2nd level tech kept telling me to update my IE, I was like no... She then said since it wasn't working I had to call up MS, yeah right... She MADE me delete my cookies, update my IE, update my encryption from 56 to 128(I like 56 just fine....). Gave me the wrong freaking instructions on how to do it. And my original problem was that it was resolving web address(I could only get on IP address, but not normal address like www.yahoo.com).

BTW, this was comcast(@home)

First of all, 128 is required for a lot of sites (and isn't too bad to have (56 blows).
Second of all, you can fix that problem by three ways:
1) reinstall TCP/IP
2) set DNS static
3) winsock file extraction

If you don't get that fixed, I'll give ya a call (yes, I work for @Home) and we'll make sure we get it fixed.

okay that came out wrong, after rereading what i wrote. what i *meant* to say, was that if i don't know something, i ask a consultant, who does know the answer. i didn't mean that i just send the client to get misinformed by the consultant...

My favorite advice from an @home tech. I had removed the network adapter from the network config because of a IRQ conflict. When I rebooted the computer it was giving me a bunch of errors about netsock.dll and other stuff. The techs advice? Even though I could get into windows was to reformat! I laughed politely and asked for level 2 tech

I'm in the process of completely disassembling and rebuilding a new server that a friend had custom built by someone who thought he knew alot more than he did. The first thing I discovered were 2 motherboard mounting standoffs, not in mounting locations, contacting circuitry on the board. It would have been fatal. The reason I got it, is because the guy got hung up on how to cable all the drives. There are 5 scsi HD's, a burner and DVD, and system will be run in Raid 5, using 4 in the array, and one for OS only. It will boot off the onboard Adaptec Ultra 160 controller, then the 4 will be in Raid 5 on the AMI raid controller add on card. Don't have to look far to find incompetence. :Q

Good Lord...

I can imagine it wasn't some cheap ECS motherboard either. I'd cry if I toasted my Tiger MP.

Properly, I would hope.
Nothing will be on the onboard U160 channel, exept 1 drive that Win2k is installed on. It is not part of the raid array. Then a 50 pin cable, from the onboard controller, to the DVD and Burner.
The 68 pin LVD cable will service the other 4 drives, in raid 5 from the AMI controller. (add on card)

You have *no* idea how stupid people can be. As a senior in HS the net admin labled me a "hacker" I mean just because I wrote a packet sniffer and collected the pw's for 3/4 of the school..that doesn't make me a hacker--though she never knew, I checked a year after I graduated and it was still running. Anyway, I got sent to the VP cuz of a bad link. I log in, double click on netscape....it can't find the file. I click bowse start scanning the tree and I get a hand on my shoulder. I have to stand against the wall while she ran to get a book entitled "Learning Windows 98 Visually". Anyway, I was in trouble for accessing a "tree-like application." Now this was the Admin for the WHOLE SCHOOL DISTRICT!

Anyone got a better story? If no one does, I'll tell you the time I got detention for changing the windows green desktop to a lovley picture of a Christmas tree that I drew in Paint.

My senior year, i would work the afternoon as a school computer tech. I can't think of any better stories than yours right now, but i can tell many stories that's just as bad. Our school techs were idiots. I mean completely retarded!!! Hell, they thought win me was better than 2000. They wasted soooo much money too. They really prove that it isn't what you know, but who you know. Oh well.

SS#. we got in trouble for hacking the network... till i showed the president where to find the file and how to open it...

Um, no, I meant that I *do* work for @Home. Excite and @Home were business partners. As far as I know, it was Excite that went out of business and almost taking @Home down with it. AT&T bought @Home. We're still kicking.

I got one.

freshman year high school, I discover the only lab in the school is a series of 386s and 486 linked up into a thin network(the kind that uses the coax-type cable and t connectors). Anyways, the last computer had the terminating chain linked into a small ring on the chassis of one of a few 486s we had. Every day, the terminator chain was off the hook and, bein the way I am and knowing the admin personally as a nice guy, but unknowledgable, I would just put the damn thing back. I leave school for a week to attend a seminar on debate and return to find an irate faculty demanding to know what I did to screw up the network. It hadn't been working properly all week and, the admin couldn't figure out what was goin on. Sure enough, the damn terminator chain was off it's little hook. Here's the kicker. I show them the little chain thingy and, after rounds of threatening me cuz they think I'm bsin them, they accuse me of pulling it off before I left. It's kinda funny when you think about it for a sec.
