Is bee population actually dangered? I had no idea... It's good to know. They ARE good to have as they help pollinate plants, it's just too bad they choose spots that well, put us in danger. You can't really "move" a bee hive either. Even if you did, they'd probably go back to same spot since it's what they know.

normally i dont give a shit, but the bee population is pretty fucked up.

He could have contacted a local beekeeper and I'm sure they would have been happy to come and get those hives. Given all the publicity about the honey bee hive collapses it would have been the right thing to do.

What a retard. He could've called some bee farmer to come and collect the hive, making some money in the process. Instead, he killed a hive of bees and wasted good honey. I hope some wasps come and sting him to death.

Commercial bee keepers haul their hives all over the country to polinate crops so the bees will stay with the hive.

Actually, that was the ideal location to move a hive from. Since the bees where there for a long time & seemed to be surviving quite well without really bothering anyone, he could have grown some balls, gotten some equipment, and moved the hives the boxes that beekeepers use somewhere else in his yard. Free all-you-can-eat honey.

how the hell could you be that ignorant of a nest THAT huge growing in your grill on your porch? The bee activity would be HUGE let alone you could simply hear all the wings.

The Earth's ecosystem is arguably fucked if all the bees die off. I watched a PBS "Nova" program on colony collapse disorder, and the implications are pretty frightening if plants can't get pollinated.

I'm sure he had no idea what kind of bees these were, what the hive looked like, or any other details until AFTER he killed them.

Also, the nut farmers in California would be dooooomed without bees. I believe something like 90% of almonds are pollinated by bees.

You can "rent" a single box of bees to a farmer for almond pollination for around $100 now.

edit: knowing me, i would have asked on ATOT what to do... :/

Bees are lucky.

If I want to go out pollinating lovely young flowers, I have to pay for it.

Sometimes with money, and sometimes with jailtime.

To all you idiots saying bees are indangered:

Bees aren't native to Australia. So the eco system and agricultural systems aren't reliant on them. So there is not shortage of there here.

Agreed. The story is quite amazing but it's also depressing. Bees help everyone out. They do absolutely no harm and they are dying off.
