April 12, White House hotly denies report on Iraq WMD 1 hour, 38 minutes ago

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The White House on Wednesday angrily denied a newspaper report that suggested President George W. Bush in 2003 declared the existence of biological weapons laboratories in Iraq while knowing it was not true.

On May 29, 2003, Bush hailed the capture of two trailers in Iraq as mobile biological laboratories and declared, "We have found the weapons of mass destruction."

The report in The Washington Post said a Pentagon-sponsored fact-finding mission had already concluded that the trailers had nothing to do with biological weapons. The newspaper cited government officials and weapons experts who participated in the secret mission or had direct knowledge of it.

The Post said the group's unanimous findings had been sent to the Pentagon in a field report, two days before the president's statement.

White House spokesman Scott McClellan called the account "reckless reporting" and said Bush made his statement based on the intelligence assessment of the CIA and the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA), an arm of the Pentagon.

Bush cited the threat posed by weapons of mass destruction as the prime justification for invading Iraq. No such weapons were found.

A U.S. intelligence official, speaking to Reuters on condition of anonymity, confirmed the existence of the field report cited by the Post, but said it was a preliminary finding that had to be evaluated.

"You don't change a report that has been coordinated in the (intelligence) community based on a field report," the official said. "It's a preliminary report. No matter how strongly the individual may feel about the subject matter."

McClellan said the Post story was "nothing more than rehashing an old issue that was resolved long ago," pointing out that an independent commission on Iraq had already determined the intelligence on alleged Iraqi biological weapons was wrong.

'RECKLESS REPORTING'

When an ABC reporter pressed McClellan on the subject at his morning briefing, McClellan upbraided the network for picking up on the report.

"This is reckless reporting and for you all to go on the air this morning and make such a charge is irresponsible, and I hope that ABC would apologize for it and make a correction on the air," he said.

The three-page field report and a 122-page final report three weeks later were classified and shelved, the Post reported. It added that for nearly a year after that, the Bush administration continued to publicly assert that the trailers were biological weapons factories.

The authors of the reports -- nine U.S. and British civilian experts -- were sent to Baghdad by the DIA, the newspaper said.

A DIA spokesman told the paper that the team's findings were neither ignored nor suppressed, but were incorporated in the work of the Iraqi Survey Group, which led the official search for Iraqi weapons of mass destruction.

The team's work remains classified. But the newspaper said interviews revealed that the team was unequivocal in its conclusion that the trailers were not intended to manufacture biological weapons.

"There was no connection to anything biological," one expert who studied the trailers was quoted as saying.

End story...................................................................................................

At least our man Scott McClellan will get a chance to earn his money, trying to slime & weasel Dum-Dum out of another lie. Another lie that leads to death.

I remember them prematurely claiming that they had found mobile weapons labs, but I do not recall them repeating that statement for a great length of time.

The vehicles in question were actual for filling hydrogen balloons and were sold to Iraq by the British.

the reason us anti's don't move past it, is because people are still dying because of it capt underoos. But you're too busy closing your eyes and waving the flag to see that. It's just more proof that this administration is full of liars, and thugs, of course they have no cajones, but they can send others to die.

Te fact that this does not anger you shows how far gone you are. You call them "antis" the rest of the us calls them a majority of concerned citizens. You know some of us are interested in the truth and don't like being lied to by elected officials. You do your country a disservice every time you close your eyes and ears and let people off the hook, you should demand accountability like the rest of us.

Yup. Bush made the charge and it was oft repeated and never corrected until long after they knew the truth. *Maybe* when the claim was stated it was a reasonabble claim, but after the initial claim it soon became false and any repeating of the original claim was then an outright Lie.

The "antis" are the most patriotic americans you will ever meet. Protest IS patriotism We search for nothing but the best for america, we dont blindly follow an administration, we dont use violent means to impose our perspective, we respect all cultures, we dont sell out our workers and intelect to foreign countries, the bottom line is not the dollar or to further the empire. If you think america is all about the bottom line and the dollar, as this admin does, good luck.

What a testament to the power of propaganda.
There are still people who believe we found wmd in Iraq.
There are still people who believe Bush hadn't made up his mind and his plans months before going to the UN and that he would have invaded no matter what.
There are still people who think Bush is doing a great job in Iraq.

Its either a sad testament to Americans educational system that they can't follow current events or an ever greater testament to the power of propaganda.

Second step?? Dude, now who needs his meds? Who the hell made this list? Is Italy on it? What about Portugal? Aren't they part of the Axis of Easels? Good thing Picasso's dead, otherwise dumbya would take him out...
Iraq didn't have ANYTHING to do with al qaeda or 9/11, I know that's like telling dumbya he's not doing god's work. But it's true, check out the 9/11 commision, someone from your fringe should finally believe it.
Good luck in Iraq, watch for friendly fire..

I wouldn't worry too much about Pale. By the amount of posts he makes, I think his greatest challenge is for his squad to beat the previous squads record of 1 ton of potatoes peeled per hour.

Of course we're stuck in 2003, we're still dealing with the monumentally dysfunctional aftermath of it. Are we supposed to pretend it isn't happening even at this very moment?

On the list of WHAT? The best insurance against religiously fundamentalist Iranian ambitions in the Middle East? 'Cause that's what Saddam WAS, which is why Bush Sr. and Co. left him in power. Only fools took his tough talk seriously - and although he was a monster at home, I frankly don't care. Only a tough dictator could hold Iraq together without a civil war, and only a tough Iraq can serve as a natural counter-balance to Iran, especially if they are on opposing Muslim factions.

Now the US is stuck having to prevent an escalation of the Iraqi civil war, and simultaneously constraining Iran - a very tough task, and very, very expensive.

Balance this against the effective and cheap control o the region we HAD prior to the invasion - a few overflights per day, an embargo, and weapons inspections. You could have tripled Hans Blix's budget twice and still comfortably have been cheaper than a week of this war.

And as for oil - well, it's really nice to control Iraq and hence the oil supply - too bad we can't actually PUMP very much because we can't stop the civil war...

Future Shock

no, just for once, instead of crying, bitching, and worrying about mistakes made in 2003, you could put some thought into solving the problems we're facing in the present and future... or, heaven forbid, become part of the solution!

just a thought.

I remember for a while there it seemed like every other day there were shouts of "Eureka!" from this administration, having found the WMD. All of them debunked, btw.

I remember this particular find quite well. I lost count of the number of "I told you so" posts by the hawks here. When this also was debunked, they all acted like their cat got kicked or something. (Or, having their hopes dashed, simply refused to acknowledge this particular story anymore...you know, like our own zendari and his DeLay thread.)

Here's a good solution: Jail all the worthless fvcks in power now. And have them all on display so we can spit in their fvcking faces.

It's reasuring that you don't give a sh1t that you were lied to by your president. How fvcking patriotic to be a retarded blind follower.
