....i was overclocking when i dunno what happened but after changing my fsb to round 230 my sata hdd got corrupted. i herd others also having there hdd corrupted due to o/c and reinstalling is only option.

i dont mind reinstalling....thatmuch...., but, i hooked the hdd up as slave in my other pc and everything seems to be there all the folders but "some" folders i try to open ('inconveniently' my folder with alot of my data in it and also my documents folder with all my important info and files) comes up saying 'the folder cannot be read or opened as it is corrupted or lost' somecrap like that....so thatfreaked me out!
also the folder properties showed "0" bytes in them

i did a restart and then it started doing that consistency check before you login to xp on the corrupted hdd, and it started to delete all the corrupted folders n files!! :|

so after that i got into windows and all those folders that were corrupted were gone.....now i was really mad.

is there still a way i can get any data back or something? my hdd still shows 77gb which was howmuch was used before the corruption, i selected all the folders in the hdd including all windows, program files, everything and they all come to 25 gig, so if the hdd is reporting 77 gig used my data must be somewhere on there?

can anyone please help with ANY suggestions or ways to get back this data, can you please refer me to a program that recovers deleted data from a NTFS partition.

Thankyou for any help!!!!

i really can't undestand why people don't back their data up, especially when overclocking. that's just an invitation to disaster. lesson learned i hope.

I NEVER back-up my files. I have never once done it. I burned files to a CD when re-formatting but that's when I had a 7GB drive. Get an external HD with USB2 or firewire (Firewire is the best) and first FORMAT it as soon as u get it, or u will get write errors, I learned it the hard way =/. Then just put all your files on there and u are set. That's all I do now, and I work straight from it. There are some cheap one's Like I picked up a WD 120GB External for $40 out the door, black friday is coming up soon so look for external deals during that time.

Or even better yet use gmail as a back-up system, there is an app somewhere that will do that for your =)

good for you. obviously your data is not that important to you. IMHO, hdd are so cheap these days that there is almost no excuse for NOT backing up.

It's cheap. It's simple. And it can save your a$$. What other reasons might one need?

Just working of an external drive wont help if that drive crashes, but apparently not a problem for you since you've never backed up before.

As far aws Gmail...I wouldnt backup my sensitive info to a mail server that doesnt belong to me. Too many security issues. Not to mention it would take forver to backup that way.

^ There's an application that BACKS UP THE DATA FOR YOU ON GMAIL. Read what I said. Yes my data is VERY important to me, that's why I store it on externals, I hav'nt had any problems with externals.

It can crash, just like any other hard drive. Just like CD/DVD media can get corrupted as well. The best bet is to have more than 1 backup, covering more than 1 media type. i'm in the process of burning all my data onto DVD-R, as well as building a secondary backup machine to my main rig and file server.

im aware of the application, so just keep your pants on.

1. some people have more data to back up than can be stored via gmail
2. large backups via email are going to take forever. a local network backup or local drive backup i can backup several gigs in a few minutes. I can use rsync to make that even faster.
3. i dont want my private info stored on a public mail server that can be hacked.

I say to each his own, but using gmail as a valid backup solution is a hack at best. I certainly don't have a problem if thats how you do your backups, but there are much more practical, and safer solutions available.

pointless, unless I am misunderstanding you. Working straight from the external drive offers no backup unless its mirrored to the local drive.

Never had problems with external, but you got errors? kind of a contradiction don't you think?

Well the reason I got errors on my External is becasue it was like FAT 16, and I was on NFTS. Their was some conflict. But Getting stuff off the external never hurt me. Working straight from the back-up means if your main HD fails your external won't be effected.

You know more so ya.

But that's not a back-up, that's using the external drive as an add on to main storage.
You must live in an area that is not prone to lightning strikes? Or flood? Of fire?
Or random coffee/soda spills, pets, small children, or dust build up?

A "Back-up" is a copy of the data that you don't use. It is kept on standby in case you need to
restore the system back to a workable state.

What you are doing is keeping a seperate archive to the data. That adds an extra layer of
usability but doesn't provide the main feature of a true backup, keeping the data safe somewhere
else that will not be affected by disaster striking your whole system.

glad you got it back, ive used a program called GETDATABACK from runtime software works great, NTFS licence is 80$ so not bad IMO

ive gotten to the point where i just brun massive amounts of stuff to DVD

and what isnt burned is mirrored on another drive, you can get a 200GB HDD for like 100$ and back up everything

i have windows on C
on D is music and Documents & pics
E: mirrored music and docs & Pics
F: videos/random storage

i also copied all my music and docs to my mp3 player

data loss pisses me off so i make sure im not fusked if it happens again

well i dont want to backup my data to dvd's or other hdd's as it will cost alot, because i have 600gb worth of hdd space which 500gb is used up for data (music, movies, games, apps, pron, etc) if i needed to back all this up it would cost me alot on dvd's and i dont like burning large quantities to media as its very time consuming, apart from that i dont wanna spend $$ on media, also buying another 500gb worth of hdd's to backup my existing 500gb is expensive also.

So i'm going to backup only my documents and crucial files, not my movies games apps which take up most of my 500gb which are all on the net to get again or at LAN events. i'm just gonna backup my crucials to a few dvd-rw that way i can add and del anytime (although i do have a copy of (most) of my documents and crucial files backed up to one of my other hdd's but not all of them.
I never bothered before as ive never really lost anything in over 7 years of using computers and still really havent, ive always managed to get things back if the hdd was corrupted.

The stratagy I use is to back up all my data files, favorites, my docs, drivers, quicken, office, ect ect to one RW DVD that I recreate on Monday every week! I also Ghost my c: onto my d: once a week also! The DVD burn contains all the data and drivers and the ghost image is for disastaers!
