A similar thing happened here at Iowa State. They took down a couple big ftps with a few terabytes total. After that our internet speed went to complete crap because now everyone uses kazaa and other p2p to get their stuff where as before a few people download something once and then it circulates over the lan.

No one ever stops and thinks about that.. Maybe they should.

That piracy is illegal and the RIAA and MPAA will see that all traders are punished? Risking your futures boys and girls, pray you aren't one of the "examples".

ppl, if it was a DC hub, then more than 8 rooms were involved, you have to see that. they were just the ones running it i'd assume. word gets around in schools, and if there are 50,000 ppl there, i guarantee more than 20 ppl were in that hub. that's why it tied up so much resources, it wasn't just those 5 people. not defending them, just explaining.

Do you have a link?

Here it is... but it is for subscribers only :\

I actually know one of the kids who was busted. He hasn't been able to chat much... because they have his computer. He told us about the bust on Tuesday morning. He spent all night talking to Police, ResNET, and apparently FBI

tell this kid next time he get arrested is to tell a cop he wants to see a lawyer and shut his mouse. Talking to cops in alot of instances is really stupid
Everyone told him that. I wouldn't have said anything without a lawyer... I wouldn't even have gone to the station unless they forced me too.

That is how it worked on my floor at GAtech. Someone would download what everyone would needing instead of 60 people downloading at once. Have a few people burn it on 52x CDRW's and then let it move down the hall. We would have shared over lan, but it maxed out at not even 100k/s:disgust:

This is too bad for them... Especially when it's some 'crap' they don't really need. I'm talking about some stupid movies and music. And it's a crime. Well, yes it is.

No one has been charged with a crime, OSU Police Chief Ron Michalec said.

Now that sounds better. Of course, it's still illegal and immoral even though they weren't charged. If they will be charged, though, it's gonna suck for them. Geez, to go to jail for fricking movies and mp3s...

These cops should've may good use of there time and try to find missing persons or better yet stop the drug dealers froms selling drugs.

This is the Columbus PD you are talking about. They prefer to practice their rubber bullet marksmanship so that they can more effectively take headshots on girls passed out on second floor balconies.

Ohio State students sharing pirated music and movie downloads on their dormitory computers were draining 10 percent of the university's vast computer system.

That drain led OSU police on Monday to four dormitory rooms where students were suspected of providing the free entertainment to thousands of students. Armed with search warrants, the officers interviewed students in those rooms and seized five computers.

If this story is right, we're talking about 4 dorm rooms, 8 people max (probably not even 8 since they only seized 5 machines), who are directly responsible for an obscene amount of traffic on one of the biggest college campuses (and presumably one of the biggest campus networks) in the world. WTF do they expect.

You've got to do a lot to distinguish yourself from 50,000 other students -- but they did!!! I bet the parents are so proud that their sons were single-handedly able to serve enough pirated media files that OSU conducted a three-month investigation to figure out WTH was going on with their network resources. LOL!!!

The amount of bandwidth that OSU has is insane. Taking up 10% of it is hard to do.

actually, one university where I used to work (can't disclose name cuz they haven't really finalized it) in entertaining the idea of legally setting up a service for students to download from after obtaining licenses from the artists etc. They figure it might save some money over all the upgrades to the network to prevent slowdowns and the cost of those fat pipes.
