Bullsh!t.

Depends how far home is, but she likely wouldn't have gotten out of the parking lot without hearing that something serious was wrong under the hood. I've heard a dry engine start and it isn't pretty.

I doubt it was empty, but it may not have been full and/or:

- they cross threaded the drain plug and it leaked.
- They crossthreaded the filter or didn't oil the filter gasket and it leaked.
- they put the wrong filter on.
Ever see the video of that old Honda being bounced off the redline with no oil for a few hours?
Unless she was driving very far, she would make it home.

I know I'll probably be flamed, but I always take my car to the dealer, I figure if all they work on is Honda's there is less of a chance that they will F-up.

I always check the oil level right after getting it changed. The guys that do the work make like seven bucks an hour, and probably smoked their lunch.

Guess if I was being paid so little I wouldn't be sweating the details either.

All the places I've had my oil change they always bring the dipstick over to me to show me that they've filled it. You can usually watch them measure it too to make sure they didn't forget to wipe the dipstick before showing it to you.

She drove for almost 2k miles before she noticed the noise. I don't know why the oil light didnt' come on, it was definatly waaay too low. My guess is that they did a poor job draining the oil and left a quart or so in there and then didn't add any.

I would like to get a new engine out of this but how should I go about doing this? I was planning on asking nicely first and see what they do. Then if they don't do what I want then go to the BBB and possibly talk to a lawyer. Any ideas?

The car doesn't burn oil and there are no leaks. I think it's their fault because if it was full of oil when they changed it then it should be full of oil now.

Uh...yeah I'm not so sure that logic is going to convince anyone.

You lose. Going 2k miles without checking the oil level is improper maintenance per the owners manual (which IIRC recommends checking the oil level with every fuel up). I doubt you would get a new engine if the car was still under warranty from Toyota, much less be able to pin this on Jiffy Lube (or whoever). They will simply advise you of their free oil top-off policy for the first 3k miles after an oil change and ask you why you didn't bring it in for free oil.
And FYI, 1 quart per 1k miles is considered NORMAL consumption.
