It doesnt seem all that expensive.

For example 2 liters of soda (sugar and water) is like $1.50-$2, bottled water is a total ripoff, a pack of baseball cards is like $5, for all the trouble it take to make gasoline, $3.50 doesnt seem like all that much.

There probably could stand to be more competition between the gas companies though.

I'm pretty sure most people can live without soda, and baseball cards. I don't know many people who can live without refueling their vehicles.

LOL, I though the same exact thing when I read that statement. It's almost as irrelevant as the whole "Well in this country they pay $10 a gallon." I don't give a shit about some other country. In this country if I don't have gas in my tank I'm fvcked.

Do you even understand why Europeans and Japanese, among others, pay so much more than we do in America?

Is it because those other countries pay more for their oil than we do? Nope, we all pay the same amount.

Is it because it costs them more to refine their oil than it costs us? Nope, refining oil into gasoline, and other products, is pretty much the same in cost worldwide, excepting local labor costs.

So why do they pay so much? It boils down to how much the various countries and their govenments TAX the gasoline their populace uses. Europeans and Japanese especially have a very difficult time extracting oil from their respective countries.....which is none in the case of Japan and several Euro countries......or pretty much the whole Euro continent.

Now, since the Japanese and most of Europe is completely and utterly dependent upon oil imports for gas and other petroleum products, their respective governments made decisions decades ago to tax it heavily to discourage consumption......

That's why Euros pay so damned much more than Americans for gas.

Of course, some Euro countries have taken the conservation movement further by taxing engine sizes in cars beyond a certain size. Take Italy for instance. Since the 1970's, Italy begins to add a surcharge, or tax, on engine sizes over a liter.....the further the engine size is over a liter, the more heavily it's taxed. Yet another way governments social engineer to achieve an end.

Then, add to this that those governments made a conscious decision to build a huge infrastructure for public transportation to further take the strain off importing oil.....and it doesn't hurt that most Euro contries are smaller than Texas, or almost the whole of Europe fits within the U.S. midwest region....

You have to remember, those European countries developed their cities and communities well before the automobile was invented.....their countries grew up revolving around horse-drawn traffic or foot traffic. So when the auto and truck hit the scene, their streets/highways/byways were already laid out, so to speak, and their communities/cities were, by necessity, close together.

Contrast that to how the U.S. exploded after WWII around the automobile......even faster than it was developing prior to WWII, and it was growing even then around the car and truck. This development gave rise to spread...sprawl....and we had lots of space to grow in, much more than the small, congested European countries that were, by WWI, already very constrained and hemmed in and bound by borders of other countries.

Imagine a typical trip for an American......day at the beach from somewhere inland....say 200 miles away. We don't think anything of piling into our car and driving 3 hours or so to get somewhere for the day....and return driving the same distance.

Europeans, on the other hand, would be driving out of most of their own countries by driving 200 miles one way......something most don't do.

So, learn your history......and the reality of why some pay much more than we do for gas.....and why we pay more than some others for the same gallon of gas.

Something is going to crack and it's not going to be oil refining:

4-4-2008 Gas prices surge as production declines

Retail gas prices surged to a new record above $3.30 a gallon Friday and appear poised to rise further in coming weeks as gasoline supplies tighten.

The Energy Department expects prices to peak near $3.50 a gallon later in the spring, but many analysts predict the spike could approach $4.

Gasoline supplies are falling, in part because producers are cutting back on output of the fuel because of the high cost of crude - the more expensive crude is, the more refiners have to pay and the lower their profits are.

Meanwhile, dozens of West Virginia truckers fed up with high fuel costs converged on the state Capitol in protest Friday. They drove off three hours later, still frustrated but with assurances of support from the governor.

Gov. Joe Manchin was away from the Capitol, but before the crowd of mostly independent operators departed, he spoke to its leaders by phone during a long private conference.

"I will ask President Bush to release some of the strategic petroleum reserve to help stabilize the current cost of fuel," the Democratic governor said afterward in a statement.
=======================================================
Releasing more oil will not solve the problem. The refiners are overflowing with oil.

They refuse to crack it now. It is a criminal operation.

It's time to start putting these people in prison.

Watch how fast gas and diesel will get produced then.

What do you mean by "overflowing"? You *do* know refineries only refine oil, not store it...right? And you *do* know most refineries are operating at full capacity...right? What are you talking about? Im curious what "these" people would be put in prison for....

They're also in the process of switching over from producing winter grades of gasoline to the less polluting but more expensive grade of fuel they're required to sell in the summer.

Honestly I do not understand why you are not personally being censored on here as I am.

Where is your proof of this "most refineries are operating at full capacity" when article after article clearly shows you are way off base.

OPEC report 2007

The cartel is already doing a lot. Its members are producing 30 million barrels a day, its highest output in 25 years, and well beyond OPEC's formal ceiling of 26 million barrels. But with prices above the group's benchmark price of $22 to $28 a barrel, and most members at full capacity, oil ministers have few options when they meet Sept. 15 in Vienna.

Thank you for proving my point.

There is no oil shortage. There is no real gasoline or diesel shortage.

It's all made up. Oil inventories are still at 9 year highs. They can't hold anymore oil at the storage facilties such as at Cushman Oklahoma. They had a spill recently because they overfilled the tanks.

Maybe if environmentalists would let us build refineries instead of screaming bloody murder....

Then they all wouldn?t have to operate at 100% capacity all the time, and you wouldn?t scream bloody murder when they don?t.

Your false echos blaming non-existent eco-environmentalists is beyond old:

March 3, 2008 Valero may sell U.S. plants in hard refinery times

Top U.S. refining company Valero Energy Corp (VLO.N) said on Tuesday it is considering selling nearly a third of its North American refineries amid a U.S. economic slowdown that is crimping fuel demand, and that it is exploring new projects in the Middle East and Asia.

The outlook marks a major shift in Valero's strategy after a decade of sterling profits, acquisitions and expansions transformed the San Antonio-based company from small independent refiner into a behemoth.

Valero Chief Executive Bill Klesse, speaking at the National Petrochemical and Refiners Association meeting, said the company is close to selling refineries in Aruba, Memphis, Tennessee, and Krotz Springs, Louisiana, and has received interest from potential buyers for two other plants.

Klesse reiterated that Valero will spend about $4 billion to $5 billon on capital expenditures this year and about $5 billon in 2009.

Valero two weeks ago announced it will spend $2.4 billion to expand its Port Arthur, Texas refinery by the mid-2011. The expansion of the refinery will boost throughput to 415,000 bpd from the current capacity of 325,000 bpd.

U.S. 'GOLDEN AGE' OVER

After a stretch of soaring profits that Valero once dubbed "the golden age" of refining, the sector in the United States has faced a sharp downturn.

Surging crude oil prices, softening demand growth, tough environmental regulations and rising costs for materials and labor have cut into margins and led U.S. refiners to slow fuel production and scrap more than a half a million barrels per day in expansion plans in recent months.

Interesting to note that the world oil useage, per CNN radio, is down over 400,000 barrels per day vs this time last year and US gasoline reserves are 9% over the "norms" (whatever that is). If "WORLD" useage is down 400,000 per day, there goes the ole blame it on China/India's booming markets and increased oil useage theory.

Many people have been syaing it's odd that it's not at least $5 now if not more based on how high oil has gone.

Europe is paying over $10, why are your Oil buds holding back here in te U.S.?

You seem to have an inside track with them even more so than I did when I lived in their backyard so let's hear it.
