Don't do what I did. I drained the CVT oil instead of the engine oil in my new car. I was in a rush and while I was doing it, I thought to myself that the oil plug seems to be in a different place. Not sure why Subaru would use the same drain plug for both! Anyway, I figured something was wrong when I added oil and the dipstick showed way too much oil.
Subaru actually switched the front differential to a T70 because so many shops would drain it thinking it was the oil pan. The CVT plug is pretty far back to confuse the two though.

How much did that mistake cost to fix?

The oil's practically like water when it's hot. Especially today's super thin oils. You don't have to wait. Enough has drained back to the pan by the time you can pull the hood release, get out, open the hood and pull the dipstick to know if you have the proper amount or not.
You don't need to let it sit. If you do, you have a gummed up motor which means you have other problems. Oil drains back FAST.
A lot of "shops" like wal-mart will pull the dipstick the second the engine shuts off. When it reads low they add more oil, overfilling. You have to give it some time to drain, I agree it doesn't have to really long, but it needs some.

It was located a little far back but it was attached to a drain pan so it looked OK but not at the same time. Didn't cost me a thing to fix luckily. I used new/clean catch pan and just pumped it back into the reservoir. Had to run it though the gears so that I could get all of the oil back in.

Although it was my mistake, I can see places like Jiffy Lube messing this up. For something that you shouldn't change or service, why use a standard drain plug? I believe it used to be a hex/torx bolt or something before.

I've owned 4 Subarus from a '99 to a '17 all have had normal drain plugs on the tranny. The Torx has only ever been on the front differential. I can't remember for sure if my '99 had the torx, but I know the 2006 did on differential.
