This drives me nuts.

99/100 times a person says "this router isn't reliable" means user error.

You want a reliable router? Then get one that meets your needs or at least understand why you are breaking routers.

I do have to disagree with this statement, especially in the SOHO market. I've seen routers that have been reset to their defaults that randomly power cycle themselves or have other random issues (ie, wireless just stops broadcasting, the internet suddenly stops for no reason and requires a power cycle, the router randomly power cycles, etc, etc). These are usually from 1 or 2 specific manufacturers but I have seen them. I used to work for a large regional ISP and we used to test dozens of routers to try and find the one that would actually work reliably and we found a LOT of problems with some of them. I'm not sure how you can put "user error" on a router with absolute factory default settings but hey, go for it if it helps you sleep at night.

Like my Westell 327W. I went to connect to it's wireless today, and found out it wasn't broadcasting anymore. I had to power-cycle the router. Not to mention, it seems as though the DMZ feature is broken.

Not necessarily. I think you're talking about higher-end gear when many of us will automatically assume low-end SOHO.

This is true. The high end gear that statement is very valid. Low end SOHO gear is what I was referring to.

Friends don't let friends post while sloshed.

I recall a late-night message to a friend who I later asked to "please erase the message without reading it".

I'm on my 4th wireless router / AP.

I started with a Orinoco AP that did 802.11b. I decided to move to g.
I got a nice Dell 802.11g router that worked for around a year before the power supply blew and fried the device.
Then, I bought an expensive Zyxell router that had great reviews. I had it for about a year before it started resetting constantly and wouldn't remember settings.
Now, I have a pair of Buffalo G-125s with DD-WRT that have been working great for a while *knocks wood*.

I've had three Linksys routers up and die on me for no apparent reason. Other than that, they were great to use. So much so I kept going back. I'm now on a crappy D-link router and it's actually not bad. It gets great reception and takes care of the fiance's laptop just nicely. I just have no clue why the Linksys WRT-54G's (all three of them) decided to die on me. Looking back, I should've at least tried re-flashing them, but that still shouldn't happen.

I've had a couple of Linksys routers/access points fail and two were recoverable by re-flashing. But, as noted, that SHOULDN'T HAPPEN!

Unfortunately, when you lose the Internet connection because of a failed router, re-flashing the router becomes a lot more difficult! You have to take the router elsewhere to get the firmware to re-flash it, do the work, and then bring it back and set it back up, I'll usually just run to a store and buy a new router instead. It's faster and cheaper.

I've had a LinkSys WRT54G v2, and a Motorola WR850G v2, running in WDS mode, for years without issue. They never go down. Of course, both of them are on UPSes. I think that routers are more succeptable to power spikes than most people think. Either that, or the heat just kills them. I don't do torrents on these connections though, so maybe that's why it never goes down either.
