Looking at the X1800XT 512 from Sapphire or the 7900GT extreme from XFX. I was fairly confident about the NV card at first, but then I saw the FEAR performance. A very demanding game and the X1800XT appears to be superior...

I saw a few other threads on this when I searched, but thought i might be able to get another discussion going to give me that extra bit of buying confidence

** Copy & paste from another thread **

Here is your value for money - a 512mb 5900GT for the same price or slightly cheaper than most 256mb 7900GT's sell for.

It features a dual slot cooler and heatsinks for the memory too.

Image
550/1400 default clock speeds.

xpertvision product link

If xpertvision doesn't float your boat, you can get (literally)the same thing by Gainward

Memory on both cards is rated @1.2ns, comare that with most 7900GT's using 1.4ns memory, plus a decent heatsink that should definitely hewlp core overclocks.

Interesting factoid: Palit owns both Gainward and xpertvision. The cards are identical other than pcb color and silk screening. That should help ally any concerns over xpertvision (some doubted their reliability in my 6600GT 256mb thread).

The auspcmarket link above is no longer valid (they must have sold all their stock), so here is a partial list of sellers & prices in Australia.

Also, sparkle also have a 512mb 7900GT out, but with slower clocks. Text

Where's the x1800xt 512 @ $250?! Or are you saying there;s no point in the 512, just buy the 256 for $250?

Personally I opted for this 7900gt:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814130015

It's supposed to be quieter, cooler, and slightly slower overall than the X1800XT 512MB. That fits my needs...depends on what you want. If you want better speed and don't care about noise/heat, go with the X1800XT 512MB. At least this is what I've gleaned reading the 7900GT vs. X1800XT threads.

EDIT: removed wrong ATI link

Look at the Evga 7900GT KO, its basically the same card and cooler as the one used in the Signature one. I don't know if it has the volt mod already done if Ocing is your thing. I am pretty sure its clocked at 520 and 1400 which should put it above the X1800XT. I picked up mine for 288 at new egg.

Just looked its still at that http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814130015

The HSF is copper, the fan is quieter, and the HS actually covers the memory.

I have no idea if they ship to the USA or not. I Don't see why they would not, frankly. If they don't I suggest hassling your retailers over there and demand to know why they aren't importing these cards.

$500 australian is roughly $386.34 US according to xe.com Bear in mind we have a 10% GST here - $450 AU before tax ($347.72 US).

Some australian sites might ship to the USA, you'd have to check their conditions of sale out.

lol $385 for something that's about = to an X1800XT at stock... yea... that's a real value. I mean if you volt mod why buy a pre oc'd edition just my opinion.

i had the same choice, and decided on ati this round (nv last round), and went with the 1800xt 512mb. main reason was ati x1k series offered superior texture filtering over nvidia at this time.

no regrets whatsoever.

By that time the X1900's will probably be in your range. Why even look for a card now if you won't even have the money until August?

If you're buying until August, then you'll probably have different choices. You should be able to get an X1900Xt for $300 by then.

I bet the x1900xts are still way above $300 in August. Not expecting prices to chance much at all, they haven't changed significantly over the last severals months
