Eminem is good but have you listened to anybody else besides 50cent jay-z and nas?

Eminem has had some good songs, I give him that, but he doesn't have the lyrical prowess of Talib or Mos.
Listen to "The Manifest" by Talib Kweli. Such an awesome song, he spells out the rules that rappers should follow when trying to make music. Also check out "Knowledge of Self" by Talib as well.
Are you serious? Listen to Em's flows man. His rhymes aren't like Mos or Talib's, where they eat up the last vowels of words to make them rhyme. This guy gives rhyme after rhyme. He can make you cry and laugh in the same sentence.

Em has definately has awesome flows, no doubt about it. He can make anything rhyme. But being the best rapper is more than just having awesome flow and rhyming skills. Your songs have to have a message and meaning too. While a few of Eminem's songs do have meaning such as the one about his daugther and his past life, a lot of his other songs are just plain vulgar and "pop-ish".

Btw, another rapper who has awesome flow and can make anything rhyme is Slick Rick. All of his songs are nice little stories that are a lot of fun to listen to.

You're right. But the guy is going for what the public wants. Not only did he prove that he is the best, but he intergraded new styles so he can make some money.
Mos Def sends a message in all his songs but isn't that rich nor famous. So i guess its about the artist's interest.
I'm sure Eminem could have all his songs be serious and touching, but that won't catch the world's attention. There are more rich kids that would buy his albums as they are, than they are "rap listeners" that care about meaningfull songs.
Then again, i'm sure Eminem will stay a world legend just like 2Pac did, while i can not say the same for Mos Def. Honestly, i wouldn't have known about Mos Def if he never rapped on Chappelle's Show or showed up in a bunch of blockbuster movies.
No offense, i like Mos and Talib, i'm just pointing out other factors that make up Em's fame and interest.

I agree with everything you said.
Just one thing though, going for what the public wants doesn't make you the best rapper. It makes you cater to the lowest common denominator. The "best" rapper usually stands by his message and his views and only makes music that he truly believes in, not what brings in the cash. That is what keeps independent & underground artists like Mos Def, Talib, Jurassic 5, Immortal Tecknique, Tonedeff, etc... different from 50 Cent, Eminem, Yin Yang Twins, and all that other Southern bullshit rap that has started to become popular these days.
As for Mos Def not being rich or famous, thats because he likes it that way. The guy only cares about his artistic interests and his charity. I mean, I don't even think he has a drivers license!

You're right, but Eminem's fame doesn't make him a bad rapper. We're talking about skill and not views.
Eminem's got talent, and obviouslly his stuff works. He gets the money, the respect, and the fame. And that, does not make him a "bad rapper" by any means.

I just said he wasn't the best rapper. But he is definately very talented and I enjoy quite a few of his tracks. In terms of skills, he is one of the best. But skill alone is not enough, you gotta use it in the right way.

Well, he's used it as he should on many occasions, which proves that he can. Now the fact that he chooses not to, doesn't mean he can't.
I'm going to bed. Nice discussion. Actually, this is the first discussion on AnandTech that i've had a disagreement and it was clean and proper. No flaming.
Its been good.

I don't really listen to rap, but I'd love to hear the "good stuff"
Please enlighten me.
