I don't really listen to rap, but I'd love to hear the "good stuff"

Please enlighten me.

The Manifesto - talib kweli
Knowledge of Self/Determination - talib kweli
Porcelain - Tonedeff
Thin Red Line - Jurassic 5
Dance with the Devil - Immortal Tecknique

Pretty much anything by Talib Kweli and Mos Def.

These guys probably don't apply if by, "Current," you mean chart toppers...but in terms of skill and lyrical quality they should definately be included.

Damani Thompson (Souls Of Mischief, Hieroglyphics)

Teren Delvon Jones (Del tha Funky Homosapien, Deltron, etc.)

Ian Bavitz (Aesop Rock)

There are many great rappers out there that do not focus on, "B*tchez and Benz's," and might actually surprise you if you take the time to listen to them.

This thread gets a  without a mention of Mac Dre, just my pinion.

I would prefer best Producer. Rap could be great but if the beat is wack, then

Eminem is very very talented.

Download some of his unreleased songs that are on the internet, specifically Hellbound, Nail in the Coffin, or Go to sleep. (they are all legal to download, they were released by the artist)

He can tear people apart without effort.

I like Kanye, Jamie Foxx will I think be a rising star as well.
Talib Kweli is one of the best
And common is good too.

And that's Eminem's problem. His content. No one will argue that his skill isn't up there with the best, but unless he gets in a battle with someone he has nothing to say anymore. How many songs can you write about your life story? The only thing about his life that's changed since he came out is his relationship with his wife. If a great writer only wrote autobiography's would you consider him the best author out, or pick a great writer who had a different subject every time?

That's the reason I put Common, Mos Def, Talib above the artists like Eminem and Jay Z. I realize that the last group has the skills, but they don't take advantage of them.

I see you're speaking about battles. If you hear Eminem's first albums, when he was 18 years old i think, and some of his underground stuff, you'll be amazed. He's battled Xzibit, DMX, Canibus, Benzino, and many others that aren't famous today.

His first album is all about the street and about how it is being a poor white dude living in Detroit.

Nas is the best on that list.

But there are other excellent current artists that are missing...del, madvillian, gza, and i personally like slug from atmosphere but he doesnt get enough love. Theres a whole bunch more...these are just some of my favorites.

Eminem is mediocre tho...he has the same material and same style...i used to be a fan, before he released 4 albums which were essentially the same thing repeated

Rap sux. Its not music. Just Rhythm + gangsta stories. And sometimes not even rhythm. If Eminem want to rant about how horrible his life has been, he sould see a psychiatrist. And as for everyone else: Anything "gangsta" is retarded. Almost every "gangsta" person I have met has been dropping out of high school.

guess I'll weigh in with a couple of my choices

Some of the best rappers currently out there will fly under mainstream radio, but since this is a best rapper thread and I'll the names out there

Elzhi (a Detroit rapper currently with Slum Village, this guy can go toe to toe with Em when he was in his prime)

Phonte (this guy is 1/3rd of Little Brother, he definitely should get more attention for his skills)

Pharoah Monche (he's been around for awhile and technically he's a top 5 emcee)

Casual (he's a solo artist and also a member of Hieroglyphics, I think weak production are one of the things that holds him back. but the guy is superb, an emcee's emcee.)

Nas (I voted for Nas in this poll because he's been consistently on point lyrically for years now, his albums are fairly decent and he never fails to disappoint. He even influenced Eminem, Em's first album Infinite was his attempt at emulating Nas)

Eminem (at one point Em was the greatest rapper to ever touch the mike but for some reason he changed his rapping voice and watered down his songs. I still like him but he lost some serious points in an effort to maintain his platinum album status)

Mos Def (could have been another person to claim the greatest emcee title, but he's obviously focusing more of his time and energy to his acting career. His music has suffered because of his acting, but if he had released 2 or 3 more albums like his first one he would be the greatest)
