Mos Def is definitely good.

Edit: 2pac still my best though.

Dance With The Devil doesn't give me goosebumps at all. Its just a nice techno track made famous by the "vocal gate 666"

My brother you listenin to the wrong track. I'm talkin Immortal Technique.

Rap sux. Its not music. Just Rhythm + gangsta stories. And sometimes not even rhythm. If Eminem want to rant about how horrible his life has been, he sould see a psychiatrist. And as for everyone else: Anything "gangsta" is retarded. Almost every "gangsta" person I have met has been dropping out of high school.
It's always nice to see someone well informed.

All you scots have going for you is William Wallace and scotch.
Go back to playing golf you kilted bastard.

(sigh) Mabey I should change my screenname. I'm NOT scottish (save in ancestry). I was born (and still live in) Virginia, and my name is Scott. Hence Scott-ish. Think I'll put an underscore in there...

And if you think that Eminem is superior, lyrically, to Mos Def and/or Talib Kweli... I don't know what to tell you. And I own all of Eminem's CDs, so don't think this is fanboyism. I love Eminem, I love Mos, I love Kweli... Mos and Kweli are lyrically superior. Not to say Eminem's bad; they're just better.

And as far as Mos Def not having any money... that has nothing to do with whether he's lyrically superior. He's not interested in the loot. He's trying to be a one-man Harlem Renaissance. Go listen to one of his albums; you'll hear so much musical influence that you might hurt yourself.

And let me leave this little lyric by Mos Def for those who are doubting his skills:
Yo, I am the world renowned, verb adjective adverb
pronoun preposition suffix prefix
Original or remix, sunburst and eclipse
Me and Kwe' combine like strands on a double-helix

Great post!

And great excerpt from his song!

I didnt' know we had so many Mos Def fans on here! I thought i was the only one.

Anyone else looking forward to his new movie?

I hate voting for Eminem, but since I don't listen to rap, my knowledge is pretty limited. From what I have heard, his is the only music that actually sounds like rhymic, musical poetry. Talking over a beat isn't music (especially if you don't even bother to work with the rhythm/cadence), and too many rap artists don't get that.

The Godfather.

You have no right to make a poll like this, because it is obvious you have experienced around 5% of the 'good' hip hop music. On top of that, you think Nas can't compare with Eminem?
You do not know anything about rap. Please delete that poll and state that you know nothing about rap.

Not knowing who Common, and not adding Rakim to that list is like making a who is the best NBA player and not knowing who Hakeem Olajuwon was, and not adding Michael Jordan to the list.

You seem like one of those stupid kids who started listening to Eminem on MTV because of that catchy 'My Name Is' song. All the artists on your list are on MTV and/or BET. You do not know what hip hop is.

Your poll is 'best rapper', not best rap group so how can you add the Beastie Boys when its Boys, and not one person? Juelz Santana and the word 'best' do not belong on the same sentence, page, paragraph, or book. Kanye West is a producer (and sucks at rapping).

Well, it seems I just noticed the 'current' in your poll which differs from the original topic title, best rapper. Currently, Eminem isn't really rapping, Jay-Z retired, Nas is coming with a new album, Mos Def is starring in a movie, Beastie Boys.. retired? So then why did you add them?

LOL@ this thread.

That is not rap. Rap is Nas, rap was Biggie, rap is Rakim. Most people who listen to underground music listen to rap artists nobody here has ever heard of. When you go to a club or something, the music the dj is playing is totally different than what you expected. They play the good stuff there. The rap you hear on the radio stations that gets played over and over again is only mainstream for some parts of our society.

Many blacks don't listen to that kind of music. They prefer the stuff that is not mainstream at all. If you want to know more about rap and discover good rap and real rap, then check out some of the non-mainstream stuff.

Wow look at all the votes Eminem got. That really tells you what people perceive rap to be.

Tupac > Fitty Cent, Eminem or any other thug-wannabe rapper. These are not thugs or really know the street life as they claim they know.

I voted Common, but this poll sucks. Where's Rakim, KRS-One, Sticky Fingaz, GZA and Canibus? There are others, but those instantly come to mind when thinking about the best rappers.

Rap has utterly faltered these past years, IMO the golden years for hiphop was between 1992-1998...since then its been hit or miss, mostly misses. 2pac, Biggie, Nas, Jay-Z, Outkast (both Big Boi and Andre), Bone, DMX (1st two albums), Big L, Mobb Deep, Dogg Pound (both Daz and especially Kurupt), Snoop's first, Dr. Dre, the ENTIRE Wu-Tang Clan (ok maybe not Cappadonna or Masta Killa)...all these artists had their best stuff come out.

Now its mostly this soutern crunk stuff, which isnt bad, but its hardly impressive either. Nas is still on his game, not as great, but still got it here and there. Mos Def, Talib, and Common are also putting in the work for meaningful hip hop. Eminem was great for the first 2 albums, been poppy ever since. 50 cent would never have existed if biggie and 2pac didnt die...hes a fvckin joke. And why the hell is Juelz Santana even mentioned

If Biggie or Big L was alive today (RIP), they would tear eminem apart in any freestyle battle. Big L was one of the greatest emcees Ive ever heard. But hell, we're talking about current right??? On that list, I chose Nasty Nas, with JayZ and Mos Def not too far behind. The last album I felt was worth buying was Kurupt's Streets a Mutha*****, great album, and he'd rip eminem apart as well...underated emcee with crazy freestyle abilities.

actually rap is'nt as bad as you might think, you just have to ignore what's on mainstream radio and mtv. here's just a handful of people who have put out quality albums recently or either plan on releasing them soon.

The Roots
Mos Def
Talib Kweli (he's kinda inconsistent though)
Pharoah Monche
Rass Kass
Canibus
De la Soul
The UN
Little Brother
Justus League
Hieroglyphics
Cunnylinguists
Ghostface Killah
MF Doom
Slum Village
Jay Dee (RIP)
Madlib/Quasimoto/DJ Rels/Yesterday's New Quintet (this guy is unreal musically)
Masta Killa (despite his weak guest appearances his solo album is great)
Edan
Black Milk (this guy is one to watch out for, I predict he's gonna go far)
Asheru
Common
On Be Lo (from Binary Star)
Planet Asia
Kev Brown (I love this guy, he's criminally slept on though)
Masta Ace (his last album is a classic)
Mr Lif
Foreign Exchange (their album blew me away, yet another modern hiphop classic)
Redman
Royce (Eminem's old partner in rhyme)
Eminem

Keep in mind that list is just the tip of the iceberg
