I like Kanye, Jamie Foxx will I think be a rising star as well.
Talib Kweli is one of the best
And common is good too.

And that's Eminem's problem. His content. No one will argue that his skill isn't up there with the best, but unless he gets in a battle with someone he has nothing to say anymore. How many songs can you write about your life story? The only thing about his life that's changed since he came out is his relationship with his wife. If a great writer only wrote autobiography's would you consider him the best author out, or pick a great writer who had a different subject every time?

That's the reason I put Common, Mos Def, Talib above the artists like Eminem and Jay Z. I realize that the last group has the skills, but they don't take advantage of them.

I see you're speaking about battles. If you hear Eminem's first albums, when he was 18 years old i think, and some of his underground stuff, you'll be amazed. He's battled Xzibit, DMX, Canibus, Benzino, and many others that aren't famous today.

His first album is all about the street and about how it is being a poor white dude living in Detroit.

Kind of hard for him to rap about the streets now that he's a multimillionaire. Can't rap about race problems since he's white and he's rapped about his life already. There's nothing left to say. I think his retirement was pretty on time

No he rapped about the streets before anyone ever knew he existed.

Eminem (at one point Em was the greatest rapper to ever touch the mike but for some reason he changed his rapping voice and watered down his songs. I still like him but he lost some serious points in an effort to maintain his platinum album status)

I totally, 100%, agree with you on that. I never said his current songs are that great, i just said that he has the skill, he's proved it, and thats it.

Lyrically, no one can match them. Every single song they have written has substance and meaning to it. Hell, Mos Def wrote an entire 4 minute song about water and made it sound good and interesting!

The fact that you've never heard of Common is distressing to me. You need to re-make that poll and remove most of those rappers; they don't deserve to be up there. Juelz Santana? 50 Cent? Ja Rule? No, no, and hell no to all three of those.

And if you think that Eminem is superior, lyrically, to Mos Def and/or Talib Kweli... I don't know what to tell you. And I own all of Eminem's CDs, so don't think this is fanboyism. I love Eminem, I love Mos, I love Kweli... Mos and Kweli are lyrically superior. Not to say Eminem's bad; they're just better.

And as far as Mos Def not having any money... that has nothing to do with whether he's lyrically superior. He's not interested in the loot. He's trying to be a one-man Harlem Renaissance. Go listen to one of his albums; you'll hear so much musical influence that you might hurt yourself.

And let me leave this little lyric by Mos Def for those who are doubting his skills:
Yo, I am the world renowned, verb adjective adverb
pronoun preposition suffix prefix
Original or remix, sunburst and eclipse
Me and Kwe' combine like strands on a double-helix

Eminem has the most votes because people don't know about how many amazing lyricists are out there.

mos def is the best rapper alive. plain and simple. em's old material was good, but his last couple of albums have been jokes played on his fans. buncha goofy ass farts and burps on his album? c'mon dude! he cares more about soundscan numbers than the actual music now in my opinion. mos def has a message with his music, and hell even his rock tracks on his past couple of albums have been better than what a lot of recent rock bands have released. ive heard a couple tracks from his new album in concert and its amazing, catchy stuff. hell, i still have the words echoing in my head months after seeing him live. i havent even heard the songs since that day but still vividly remember how they go.

Awesome song: 2pac - Staring at the world through my rearview

Multiple gunshots fill the block, the fun stops
Niggaz is callin cops, people shot, nobody stop
I wonder when the world stopped caring last night
Two kids shot while the whole block staring
I will never understand this society, first they try
to murder me, then they lie to me, product of a dying breed
All my homies trying weed, now the little baby's
crazed raised off Hennesey, tell me will my enemies
flee when they see me, believe me
Even Thugs gotta learn to take it easy, listen
Through the intermissions search your heart for a plan
and we turnin Bad Boys to grown men, it's on again
I give a holla to my niggaz in the darkest corners
Roll a perfect blunt, and let me spark it for ya
One love from a thug ****** rollin with a posse
full of paranoid drug dealers, to the end my friend

I'm seein nuttin but my dreams comin true
While I'm starin at the world through my rearview (see)
[repeat 2X]

(They got me) starin at the world through my rearview
Go on baby scream to God, he can't hear you
I can feel your heart beatin fast cause it's time to die (we)
Gettin high, watchin time fly, and all my motherfuckers
[repeat 2X]

[Tupac]
Now I was raised as a young black male
In order to get paid, forced to make crack sales
Caught a ****** so they send me to these overpacked jails
In the cell, countin days in this livin black Hell, do you feel me?
Keys to ignition, use at your discretion
Roll with a twelve gauge pump for protection
Niggaz hate me in the section from years of chin checkin
Turn to Smith and Wesson war weapons
Heavenly Father I'm a soldier, I'm gettin hotter
cause the world's gettin colder, baby let me hold ya

Talk to my guns like they fly bitches
All you bustas best to run look at my bitches

Now I know the answers to the question, do dreams come true
Still starin at the world through my rearview (I say)
[repeat 2X]

(They got me) starin at the world through my rearview
Go on baby scream to God, he can't hear you
I can feel your heart beatin fast cause it's time to die
Gettin high, watchin time fly -
and all my motherfuckers/****** can die
[repeat 2X]

[Khadafi]
Back in the days we hustled for sneakers and beepers
Nine-six for glocks cause fiends hittin up blocks with street sweepers
Bless myself when knowin rules to these streets, somethin I learned
in school, on some Million Man March ****** for the piece/peace
True that, only one life to lead, a fast life of greed
Criminally addicted, infested since a seed
We all die, breed bleed like humans, towns run
by young guns, Outlawz and truants, ******'s deep
Turn eighteen, burn my will when I go
Burnt my body with my shotty, or chosin my dough
So while you reminiscin all nights out with the crew
Smoke a blunt for me too, I'm starin through your rearview

[Tupac]
Hahahaha, you ain't knowin what we mean by starin through the rearview
So since you ain't knowin what we mean let me break down understandin
The world, the world is behind us
Once a ****** get an understanding on the game
and what the levels and the rules of the game is
Then the world ain't no trick no more
The world is a game to be played
So now we lookin at the world, from like, behind us
Niggaz know what we gotta do, just gotta put our mind to it and do it
It's all about the papers, money rule the world
Bitches make the world go round
Real niggaz do they wanna do, bitch niggaz do what they can't

Starin at the world through my rearview
Go on baby scream to God, he can't hear you
I can feel your heart beatin fast cause it's time to die
Gettin high, watchin time fly, ya know/and we'll be

Man when I heard "Dance With The Devil", actually now that I think about it, I remember it being called "Track 19" but that was a while ago so my memory might be off.. But when I heard that track, I had some chills and goosebumps. Immortal was talking about some wicked sh!t man. Ridiculous.

Mos Def is definitely good.

Edit: 2pac still my best though.

Edit: Public Enemy, good stuff right there. Chuck D and the preacherism. Whoo. Fire.

Dance With The Devil doesn't give me goosebumps at all. Its just a nice techno track made famous by the "vocal gate 666"
