How many of you can actually cook?

I can cook pretty good myself, but I do not do it all that often. I think it is time for my special speghetti again/

I can cook ok. I make a really good chili and I can do pretty damn good with salmon steaks. I never tried to cook to much from recipes but have created a few good things.

I'm sorta in the process of learning to cook more than just pasta and sauce. One of my apt mates is amazing when it comes to cooking so i'm trying to learn.

My wife's a better cook than me, but I can cook just about anything. I'm in charge of the grill and the smoker plus I make all the steaks. I also do a fair amount of stir fry and Indian foods. My wife is great at desserts plus she handles the complicated foods better than I do.

I would guess the cooking is split 75/25 with her doing more than me.

I can manage my own as long as I have a cook book. As far as marinades and sauces, I'm better than the other half at it. But when it comes to baking and pastries, she's better

I am the cook in my relationship. I love it. I mostly like to cook cajun foods. Anything spicy is good, though.

I just made jambalaya Tuesday. Yum.

I can cook if I have the time, however since its so convient to drive over to my parents place I eat dinner and sometimes lunch there.

I would prefer my mom's cooking (she is an award winning cook) anyday over mine.

The only persons cooking I detest is my dad's famous "Ainthop" something he learnt to do after spending I dont know 10 yrs in Germany alone as a batchlor. Put everything in the pot and ler her pressure cook.

I was a cook for a couple of years at a 50's nostalgia restaurant, and worked odd jobs at my college cafeteria, which included covering for the cooks if they were sick. My dad has almost 20 years military experience, most of it spent as a cook, so I picked up a lot growing up. When my wife was working, we pretty much traded off on the cooking duties, now that she's at home with our baby, she usually has something going by the time I get home, so the weekends are the only times I do any cooking anymore.

Unfortunately, our menu usually depends on how tired we are. Grilled cheese is a favorite, but we make ours with mexican cheese slices (we just found these recently; if you haven't seen them, they're basically american cheese slices with peppers added).

I don't have time to cook anything that's extremely involved.

The wife makes EXCELLENT chicken fajitas.

I don't make a bad biscuits and gravy.

Most of what I make involves browning a meat and then adding a canned/bottled sauce.

Please tell me that you don't consider spaghetti a sign of a good cook!! At least go for lasagna.

I tend to stick with French meals though I've dabbled in Italian a fair amount (mostly dependent on my cookbook collection). I am called a gourmet cook by everyone who dines at our place, but I unfortunately rarely have enough time to dabble in it. My wife says I tend to make "productions" so I'm much better at dinner parties than I am at preparing a daily meal.

It's just a heckuva lot of fun to me.

Over ten years experience doing everything in a restaraunt. So, yeah, I can throw together a few things here and there.

I can cook when I have to. I wouldn't volunteer to cook though. I don't like washing the dishes at the end.

I can cook more the speghetti. It just one of my favorite things to make. It is fram scratch and I spend ~10 hours just with the sauce. I have made my own pizza, various stir fry plates, soups, some baked goods, stuff I made up because I was bored, and anything else I want to learn. I need to have my wife teach me how to cook thai food.

Ok, if you make the noodles, that's doing something! Making sauce is one of the first things I learned -- so much better than that canned garbage.

I've thought about becoming a chef as I can pretty much make anything that's written down on the first try (first attempt at chile rellenos was a disaster though!). Tried stuff off of TV, too, without any problems. Not much on desserts, but I have made eclairs before as well as tiramisu (the last one was easy actually, once I had the liquor down -- the first time I followed the recipe and put 1 1/3 cup of brandy to soak the ladyfingers, it was about half a shot per piece!).

I've been trying to adlib lately with mixed results. Had some stirfry the other day that was horrible (spices didn't work AT ALL). Oh well, that's what fast food is for.

highme: What kinds of restaurants and how did you get into the business? Culinary school, or did you just work your way up? Curious on the career aspect of it. Or (just reread the post), owned/family restaurant?

Um...One time I was making some french fries, and I ended up burning our kitchen down. I try to stay away from the kitchen now

I am one lazy b@stard at home. My wife does almost all the cooking. I have however worked at a truck stop as a grill cook, and I was pretty good as well as fast. I also worked as a breakfast cook at a Hy-Vee store in Des Moines. I also cooked and made other things at that store. Of course making about 5 gallons of cheese sauce at Hy-Vee for au gratin potatoes and mac&cheese can't really be applied to much at home.
