i pretty much built it like i'd build a PC i guess.. i'm looking to do a minor amount of gaming (mainly Guild Wars) on the go as well as possibly using this as a GPS type device (i plan on buying MS Streets&Trips). Also, given the investment, i was looking for something with a good bit of staying power.

Did i get it right? Too much? too little(no?)?

edit:

also, i've never done a pre-build PC before either and I'm not too fond of all of this extra add-on software that Dell is putting on the machine... how difficult is it going to be to remove all of this stuff?

Well....you built via Dell, which is not really configuring it at all.....

In short....it should be fine.

I have an A8Js...from my old Dell i9300.

My next purchase will be a Dell. This thing is a piece of sh!t in comparison.

My i9300 was like a Fisher Price piece of plastic, but you know what, that plastic was damn rugged.

i would definitely drop down to 1gb. you're not going to be doing anything that needs 2gigs of ram. it'll drop down to $1572 if ou do that

i would also look into asus, but the dell you have seems alright (if you drop down to 1gb)

For that price I'd look at the Sony SZ series. 13.3" screen and about the same weight. Also has a 7400. The unique thing about the SZ is that it comes with a 7400 and a GMA 950. You can switch the 7400 on or off depending on if you want battery life or gaming. Best of both worlds. I don't see a lot of Sony laptops but the ones I have seen have had good build quality.

you'd save a lot of money by buying the RAM separately and getting best buy or something to install it.

First, check RAM prices on 2x1GB sticks. If it is only $20 cheaper, it may not be worth doing this.

If it is significantly cheaper than the 2GB upgrade, get the lowest amount of RAM possible and then upgrade the RAM yourself. Dell makes it easy to do by having the memory accessible through a screwed on plate on the bottom of the laptop. Then either sell the old sticks or you can hold onto them in case you ever need warranty service (mail-in).
