OK, I tried this (scrapsilicon got me into it) and now I want to use it to backup my DVD's (and make my ohter movies smaller I made myself)

So I read some threads that seem to think the NEC ND-2500A is pretty good. I was going to get the one bundled with easy cd creator 6 to make sure I had software that would work, but will DVD shrink work with this drive ?

I have the same DVD burner and I use DVD Decrypter and DVD shrink. If your Easy cd Creator doesn't work with DVD Shrink you can always get DVD Decrypter(Freeware).

OK, what I mean is will DVD shrink see the NEC2500A and use it ? And if I have to burn using something else, will Easy CD creator 6 do it ?

For DVD Shrink to see the NEC2500A I believe you need Nero 6.

It isn't so much as dvdshrink seeing it as to having nero. You can rip in a plane dvd drive if you so desire, there aren't any compatibility requirements for using dvdshrink. When you enable direct burn in dvdshrink all it is doing is sending the files to Nero with the proper settings to be burned once transcoding is complete. As long as the program in question supports creating video dvds with the video_ts folder method it should work. Roxio programs are most often non-technical, I can't say for sure if it will offer the correct options or not. You can pick up Nero 5 , which will work fine, for about $10 from several online retailers. I have a NEC1300a and have done tons of dvds with dvdshrink, it really is great.

Plextor 708A or if you can wait until next month (May) Plextor is releasing a 12x DVD+R and 8x DVD-R burner. It also comes in a SATA flavor as well.

For someone who bought an Athlon64 3000+ in the first week it was out and has a five disk Seagate SCSI drive arrayin RAID0 that little expense won't be a scratch in the bank!

Is it true that with these burners every DVD you backup has to be on 2 discs because the burners now are not dual-layer?

Whats up Mark

I just ordered a Nec2500a and i cant wait to try it out.

I figure dual layer burner r gonna be lke 200+ and the media is gonna be like 4-5 bucxks a piece. the Nec2500a is only ~80 bucks and ritek G04 is like ~.74cents

I was wondering for all u DvD burner gurus out there.

Would it be good to leave my current 16x dvd-rom drive in and use it to rip dvds as it is 16x compared to the Nec 12x speeds?

I think i read somewhere that reading was locked at 2x? is this true and if so how do i change that?

Edit to answer mitchafi:

No, most ppl use programs like dvd shrink to "compress" real dvds and burn them to regular dvd blanks. Alot of ppl take out dumb extras and other lang tracks to make them fit too.

thx a bunch

why not wait another few week for dual layer dvds, nec price dropped like 40 dollar in 1 month.. price drop when new stuff are coming out..

you can compress dual layer to fit on one but you loose a lot.. i have 2 burner right now.. and gonna upgrade once the duals comes out..

1. Not ever movie is a dual layerd movie, though most are
2. You can always lower the quality to fit the entire movie on one single-layer disc
3. You can almost always remove extras or put them on a different disc to fit a dual-layered movie on one disc with no or minimal quality difference.

The first three movies I tried with DVD Shrink all came VERY close to fitting on one disc with all extras and additional audio tracks removed but still required a very small compression. Despite what I've been told, this was VERY noticable. Acceptable for some people, but no-where near archival / backup quality in my definition. Of course, I'm using a very nice TV and a cheap-o progressive-scan DVD player so these quality differences seem magnified to me

People: Just understand that not everyone will be satisfied with DVD Shrink. I will ONLY use it on movies which require no recompression or that I don't care about. I have used it a few times since for movies where I don't care to keep the disc around for long (Friends make off with 'em when I'm done watching it).

Best VALUE? I'd have to say a 4x dual format drive would be your best bet. I picked up a Pacific Digital dual format 4x drive last week. Burns + and - just fine for me. The extra speed is not worth the extra $$ for me, especially since the media carries a premium.

I don't think any current drives will burn dual-layer disc when available...
Checkout cdrinfo for more info. Not even the A06 will burn dual layer disc. Pioneer will have a drive early next year "A09" that will be dual layer capable.

I'd get the Plextor 708a. I use it w/ nero 6 ultra ..

Regards,
Jose
