Just want to know a litle bit more and not even sure what questions to ask.

I would consider an offer to join a team for the rc5 that I have recieved one offer by pm already and that is the one I would consider first.

None of my questions/concerns have anything to do with what I would personally gain from this. (warm fuzzys is good enough)

Concerns have to do with what are the major difference from the rc5 (trying to crack the code to show that 64 bit encryption is safe?) and the seti program (search for inteligent life off this fine planet). which will run the smoothest on my rig (see the myrig link) as far as system resources while gaming or browsing the www and doing mp3, cd burning, streaming vids, etc etc..

I may also run the rc5 on my wifes cheapo system (k62 450 based system that I built).

Which of the two gives me the most options to tweak on the results or to rephrase it... which of the two offer a better entertainment value?

Why do you do the rc5/seti instead of the other? or what motivated you to choose the one you chose?

Any other info to help me figure what project I might find to be fun and usefull is appreciated.

For sure I will join one of the Anandtech teams though.

Feel absolutely free to join the project you want but I can tell you these d@mn RC5 stats ARE addicting AND FUN. Being in the collective isn't as bad as they show it on TV.

Do both and double your entertainment value I'd use the athlon for rc-5 and your wife's k6-2 for seti, but then again I might be biased You won't experience any significant drop in performance with your rig running rc-5 and playing games, but when you need top performance you can always pause the rc-5 cruncher. If you want an easy install and to join our borg collective just dl the client here

From a pure efficiency standpoint, run RC5 on the Athlon and run OGR on the K6-2. That would give you (and the team) the most work per cycle Personally, I am a RC5 and SETI junkie, they're both great!

oh.... also you alls have some really cool litle terms and words like WU and some other terms I read in this forum? is there a link to some of the terms and abriviations? kinda like a glosary?

WU means work units and it is in these that your check for the key when you crunch them in you machine.

In response to having a distributed computing project slow your system down, I have never experienced any slow down on my system in the 9 months I've been doing DC projects(Seti, RC5, OGR).

As long as your computer has more than 64MB of RAM for Seti, you won't ever know its running. RC5 is totally transparent regardless of system because it is small enough to fit within the L1 and L2 cache of your chip.

Even playing a very CPU intensive game, you won't ever notice they're running. They might only be doing ~2-3MFlops(instead of the normal 170-200MFlops for my P3@1050), but that's because they willing give up CPU cycles.

This seems to be the number 1 concern with people new to DC projects, but they really are completely transparent to the user of the computer.

I joined SETI cause there isn't a human genome/cure for cancer/aids/famine distributed client.. when will they do that? I figured that SETI is productive cause you're looking for aliens.. and aliens are pretty sweet.. even though the chances of them being around at the same moment in space/time is next to impossible.. it'd be nice to hear what they play on thier radios/tv's.. or what they did do when they were around, whatever amount of light years ago they were.. and stuff.
