Why is this such a mystery? With the Hubble and other long-reaching telescopes, we can see the birth of many universes, ours is but a blip on the scale of space as we know it.

Why is there a NEED to have a "god"? Creationism is bunk.

Once you understand that things can happen without "causation," you will have taken your first step towards understanding how the universe works. It is your inability to get beyond "if X happens, Y must have made it happen" that is causing your hangup about the beginning of the universe.

Current cosmology can be summarized thusly:
The quantum foam of timespace had a bubble grow out of it in a random fluctuation. Instead of being reabsorbed by the foam, this bubble burst forth as the singularity producing the big bang.

Unfortunately, current cosmology also states that Omega (the shape of the universe) is equal to 1, plus or minus .012 percent. This means that the universe is essentially flat, and will expand forever. No big crunch at the end of time, and no rebirth of the universe.

Finally, an observation: Those who pose these threads are either neffing or lazy. If you REALLY want answers about cosmology, get a fscking physics book or a good book on astronomy, and stay away from the silly arguments that transpire here.

ummm...maybe they did read about it and want to discuss it with other people? How's that hurting anything?

What annoys me is when so-called "Intelligent Design" creationists try to use "scientific" terminology to describe their religious beliefs.

It kill's me when people keep saying "read the book" I.E. the bible. Like "god" himself came down and wrote it! MAN wrote it. And man is not infallible. Why did man write it? "He" was trying to explain his existence here on earth, along with other things he had no answers to. Just look at all the inconsistencies in the bible, and all the places where it contradicts itself! How can any intelligent person except this book as having all the answers to ANYTHING? Every culture has "invented" some higher power to explain the things that are unexplainable. And many have books in which where their explanations are written. What makes one any more valid than the next? In my opinion to say "read the book" is a cop-out used by people who don't want to use their own minds to try and figure out answer the question for themselves. One could just as easily say read the national inquirer. I saw the answer to your question there, and since it's in print it MUST be true!!
Another thing to keep in mind while reading the bible is how and who translated it. If you think the people who translated it didn't have a agenda your kidding yourself. Since they had their own belief's going into it. It's only logical that they translated it to say what THEY wanted it to say. And it's been changed MANY time's since then. A number of years ago "they" decided to change "thou shalt not kill" to "thou shalt not commit murder". In my opinin they did this so it would be easyier for the military to do buiss. as usual.

Exactly, because we don't know what created the Universe, it must have come out of thin air. Right?

A recent theory for how the universe came to existance is that a 10 or 11 dimensional universe collapsed, whereby all dimensions, except the time-dimension and three other dimensions, 'curled up'.
This theory makes a lot of sense if you look at superstringtheory, which needs such a number of dimensions to work.

As a conclusion, I would like to say this: the bible contains myths, told by (uneducated) members of tribes in the Middle-East, many years ago. The first idiot who takes a couple of myths and presents them as 'truth' for anything should be thrown out of society or locked up in a madhouse.

AFAIC, asking questions like this OVER AND OVER, when you KNOW what the responses will be, is neffing, plain and simple. If you want to read the same arguments over and over, use the search function, because NOTHING new has been revealed in this thread or the last 50 threads.
'nuff said?

you can get out of the chicken and egg paradox by saying that god\the origin is outside of time, therefor, it could just exsist, with no notion of time, nothing would have proceed it. And from outside of time, it created all of time. Actually, I think that time is not linear, that it's more like a point, everything that has happened, is happening, and will happen is in the moment of now, and time is but our preception on the moment of now. It makes a lot more sense this way.

Everyone on this planet, including you. You may say that you know for certain what the origin of the Universe is, but that's pure drivel.

A Man said to me, regarding knowledge of the origin of the Universe:

"Do not include me in the category of those who do not know."

A little extreme, but I happen to agree.

<< Do some truly feel that just by some chance/luck/coincidence we all just happened to form by chemical compositions over billions of years.... *POOF* make it so? >>

uh huh. So it wasn't coincidence, but some invisible force which we cannot see, feel, taste, hear or smell (or detect using technology of any kind) that just made it go "*POOF*" over the course of 6 days? Yes that makes SO much sense.

KK, did you that there is another theory (it was on the cover of Discovery mag a coupla months ago) that states that there may be an infinite number of universes? Apparently there are six factors (variables) that dictate how the universe formed and how matter interacts etc etc. If the values of even one of those six variables is even slightly different from the current one, the universe cannot exist.
You may say, but then there is an even smaller chance, however, think. If you had an infinite number of universes, then the chances of a universe capable of holding life, and forming life itself, is not as minute as you would have us believe.

This is the force that has kept Truth from the masses, for many years. There is a quiet revolution taking place, as the family of God, with slow and definite precision, takes over as the dominate group on this earth.

The difference with us, every man has a free choice, but every man will hear both sides, before his decision is made.

Glory be to the Most High God.

:frown:

sorry, can't figure out how the Quote thing worx yet...
referring to the question of who/where/what started the Big Bang and the rebuttal in query of the origins of the originator of the Big Bang:

ok, asking where the Big Bang came from or who/what started it is perfectly in Creationism's context... IMHO

but when atheism queries "GOD's" origins, is it really atheism???
by asking about "GOD" or a "higher power", who/which atheism does not recognize, what the hell is atheism???
I think when you ask about something, you display recognition of the subject of your query at the same time... (unless it's some joke or rhetorical pick-up line)
and if you're an atheism "advocate", why do you want to know 'bout "GOD", much less "recognize" that there is one??? I would think you would do otherwise and shove it right back at my face...

my $0.02

fan the flames if you must... =)

MrPALCO, the number of Christians is decreasing. The number of Muslims is decreasing. The family of 'god' is decreasing, it seems.

Anyway, I'll say now that I believe in all the gods of Hinduism (Shiva, Brahma, Vishnu). They are the true gods who are creating (Brahma), destroying (Shiva) and maintaining (Vishnu) everything on earth.

I can't believe that anyone could ever believe in other gods, let alone in one god! You, MrPALCO, are just plain wrong in everything you say and you've no idea of what the real truth is. You're blinded by lies, lies that are told by others and that you accept as the truth. I feel very sorry for you that you've so been deceived and I really want to help you. Accept the truth. Accept the real gods.

Please, let me help you.

I am not sorry, I am joyous.

Joy is a spiritual force, and part of the Kingdom of God.

Religion probably started because someone needed to make a quick buck and seen the masses were easily led. Sigh, looks like they still are. :frown:

The "big bang" was the result of God speaking, and releasing the Universe into the physical realm.
