OK< I told everybody when the summer came, I would have to shut off half my farm. I have now, as its goping to hit 87-88 today, and inside it was already 88, so if I didn;t turn on the AC, I would be roasting my dinnertime.

So not sure what my stats will be, but a LOT lower. Gravity doesn't seem to be affected by heat, maybe he has all his computers in a deep freeze, or they are not at home. Louisiana should be a lot hotter than Oregon. So I am sure at this rate he will be back to number one in a few weeks, maybe less.

Sorry.

You have to do what you have to do.

It is amazing what you manage to do regardless and is greatly appreciated

We had a high of 42 today with snow this morning! At least the ice is off the lakes for fishing!

You should water cool all of your computers Mark! Put the radiators in a huge block outside your window.

Cold today...hot tomorrow.....Tornado yesterday. Winters bring 160 plus inches of snow and summers 100 plus temperatures. Whats one to do?

Build a house underground........ move up in elevation or build a concrete bunker?

This is real where I live..... yet I still crunch for the cause.:frown:

If you can afford to build a farm....you can afford a way to keep it cool. Install solar panels that drive cooling fans.....build a network of PVC tubing underground and transfer the heat....

Its within your power. If you believe... you can do.

OK, so I have 12 computers running 700 watt PSU,s all at full capcacity, or 70 amps@120 volts. So I am supposed to

1) build all water cooling blocks for 50 devices and route them all outside to one radiator
2) upgrade my AC to 5000 btu,
3) upgrade my electric service from 120 amp to 200 amp to do all of this

Just so I can do more than 60,000 ppd for anandtech ? Even I am not that rich, or that stupid, sorry. If you guys expect more than that, maybe I should just fold for another team....

Nice to see so many can identify with my situation, and understand.... NOT

Sorry again.

I certainly can understand your situation. Most of us do as well. You have to do what you have to do with the resources you have available. If that means shutting down herds to save $$ in the summer, that's what it means.

While we will mourn the loss of the output/herd, YOU are our most valuable asset, it doesn't matter if you have a huge herd, a couple of PCs, or even no PC running. You are a TeAm mate!

And if anyone gives you a hard time about it, send them to me, and I'll give 'em a little attitude adjustment with my cane.

Thanks Ray, I was so disappointed in the first place, the lack of support was worse.

I was being sarcastic Mark. I remember summer mode, kicking my OC's from 3.6GHz to 3.2GHz and shutting down all but 2 computers. You're a great contributer to our TeAm.

It hit 90 here today, and I don't have AC. Sooo hot in my room with just my two computers. But my apartment sucks so it'd be this hot with PC on or off, this place is horrible.... On hottest days I have to shut them down for the nights though or else I can't sleep.

Darn mother nature. I'm attaching to Climate Prodiction to help fix this business!

I'm still waiting for it to get warm here..... ferkin 44 F this morning. YUCK!

I know it's driving you crazy to have to kill the PCs Mark. You worked so hard to get them all up and going. Hang in there... They will be there.. on the ready when the summer heat ends.

On the bright side, they kept you warm all Winter.

I'm not sure I'll be able to keep dual GPUs running when it's hot here. I might have to turn them off and run SMP only in July/August.... Hope not.

The temps here in Minnesota are still cool too but that will soon change. I have had kicked it up a notch do to the the lower temperatures. This week it is forecasted to be warmer so my Lil' farm will be shut down too. Well, all but 2 most likely.

Sorry Mark for your dilemma. I can almost bet most of us here do understand. I respect what you do for the cause and this TeAm.

I totally understand the heat and money issues. Recently we started having hotter days with higher humidity. My wife and I don't like to turn on the AC until it's really necessary and often that means shutting down some computers during the daytime (nights are still pretty cool). Thanks much to you for your contributions over the years.

On a side note, I did recently upgrade my main computer to a Core i7@3.2Ghz from a Q9550@3.0Ghz. Also, my HTPC just got upgraded to a Q9400@2.66Ghz instead of the old E8400@3.0Ghz, so I've got nearly twice the crunching power from that system now (4 clients vs 2). Got a good deal on the Q9400 from Microcenter ($159.99 or ~$172 after taxes), and I did honestly upgrade to the quad core just to get more Folding@Home PPD, so hopefully my expenditures will help offset some of your massive crunching power.

My HTPC system is a good one to upgrade because it is always on 24/7/365 due to it running Skype, Tversity, and being a general network backup location (I use Microsoft's SyncToy 2.0 to keep my main PC's files backed up or added to the HTPC's hard drives)

The problem I have is many sided. I have blown circuit breakers quite often, and I know I am taxing by circuit breaker box. So when the AC cuts in, I could blow the box, and have a fire. Also, even with a few shut down, the AC can't keep the house even close to comfortable, due the the extreme heat being produced (22 video cards@100% 24/7) and 11 quads@100% 24/7, and one dual-core.

So I really have no options, except to spend a LOT of money ($15k or so) redoing my whole electric service and AC. Not worth it for 60k ppd.

You could loan your rigs to other team members. Then you'd be distributing your distributed computing. We'll call it double D computing!

I'll continue to be in "summer mode" until we can sell my wife's old house; carrying two mortgages tends to put a serious crimp on available money for everything else.

I might be doing that ! Duvie lives close, and we are friends. He may be able to take one or 2 boxes.

Yup, summer has an impact on me too. I run a small AC unit in my folding room and until it gets really warm, I'll keep the boxes open. It was 54 this morning so i'm enjoying the weather. There will be outages soon, shutting down the farm when I go on vacation this weekend. Ahhhh....summer!!

keep folding,

Hmm, when I go on vacation, that's when my boxes do the most work. I leave the AC set really high (like 80°F) and just let everything burn the electricity while I'm gone. I'm leaving for Florida Friday and my wife and kids will be gone today, so I'll get to leave the PS3 running during the day for the next 10 days or so. I'm hoping to see what my maximum PPD looks like over this weekend, as I won't be interrupting any of my boxes.

When you have like 12-15 computers with 22 video cards going, the odds of something having a problem, and burning up get much higher. I won't burn my house down for F@H.

Agreed, my setup is much simpler with just 2 desktops, 1 laptop, and a PS3 to be sure.
