After ALOT of research I decided on purchasing the XP-90, Vantec Tornado (hooked up to my fan controller for obvious reasons) and the LGA775 adapter. After taking off my old Tt jungle512, applying AS5 (as per the directions on the AS website) the temps are 3 to 5 degrees celcius WORSE than before.

With the old HSF I was consistantly 5 degrees above ambiant, 10 under load. I have a tower case and the XP-90 is vertical with the bend in the heat pipes facing the power supply which is in the normal spot at the top, rear of the tower.

PLEASE tell me that i'm doing something wrong and that I didn't waste my money on a POS heatsink.

Thanks for your help in advance.

I don't know what the issue could be, other the HSF isn't seated right. But if you were running 5 degrees over ambiant, why would even bother changing your HSF? Most water coolers don't do that well.

What kind of heatsink were you using before? Artic Silver also has to burn in to be effective.

I'm pretty sure it's not seated correctly. And how much AS5 you use can really affect the temps. Don't use too much, just enough to lightly cover the CPU.

You must not have it seated correctly because my idle temp (no overclocking) is 28deg C on my cpu.

I have alot of airflow in my case though.

System specs:
A64 3200+ Venice
Asus A8N nForce4 SLI mobo
OCZ 1gb (2x512) dual channel DDR400 PC3200 CAS2.5 ram
Cooling devices:
XP-90C w/ 92mm Panaflo H1B
Panaflo rear exhaust fan U1A 120mm
Panaflo side intake fan H1B 92mm

My side intake fan is practically directly next to my cpu fan so it cools it nicely. According to Asus Probe right now I am idling at 27deg C now. Motherboard temp is 33deg C. This is just idling and no overclocking yet.

I have a setup similar to the one above and mine shows 29C idle with mid to high 30's after a little workout.

It sounds like something isn't right with the installation or the board's sensors. It's a fine HS and you didn't make a bad choice.

I dont know. Now it's showing 30deg C after I cut off the air conditioning in the room. When I run Prime95 the cpu temp goes up to 35-37deg C like yours does. The way my side intake panaflo fan is located, it's like right next to the panaflo fan thats attached to my XP-90C and my cpu fan RPM's are like 3086 instead of the 2850 the product specs say it is. That might explain it also.

Do you have a XP-90 or XP-90C ?

I'm going to try and answer all the questions so far:

As for the AS5, I followed this guide--->Artic Silver
I followed it to the letter.

My old HSF was this--->Jungle512

These are my case fans---->2 generic 80's exhaust, 1 generic 80 Side intake, 1 ThermalTake Thunderblade 120 front intake.
It looks like I might need to improve the rear exhaust. I'm limited by the size of the fans so I might need to get some more powerful ones. (old case.. 5 years, but a good quality one)

I have the XP-90.......not the copper

The first time I seated the xp-90 I hooked the two rear clips then the two front clips. The second time I did it, I put it on top of the CPU (and did the little wiggle thing to get the AS5 to spread) then snapped in the clips on the opposite corners at the same time. I think my fingers are still cramped after that little escapade.

I'm starting to think that it is simply the AS5 settling in. My temps are fluctuating 8 to 15 degrees every 4 to 10 seconds at idle. I used ASUS Probe and recorded the temps as I ran BF2 demo. It was running 15 to 25 degrees above ambient. I'll give it another week or so and see how it goes.

I hope this has answered most of the questions. As a side note I took off the side fan since its....well....not quite up to par with the tornado shall we say......

I resently installed my 7700 AlCu and my temps dropped 3-4C even with an overclock. Probably just installed it wrong or not enough AS5.

If the actual CPU temp is only 5C above ambient, then it's as good as it's going to get. Nominal is around 7C. The CPU can NEVER be at room temp!

The 7700 Cu was my second choice. If the temps don't settle down soon I will put the jungle512 back on but with the tornado on it and put the Tt fan as an exhaust fan.

I was looking at peltier and h20 combo to get it below room temp.....it's just a little out of my price range. I will be looking at a danger den H20 system at the end of the year. I can use the other HSF on my secondary system I'm going to build. Video editing is just too much of a pain in the BUTT on my primary.

I actualy found that the thermaltake jungle 512 gave me lower temps than my xp-120, but I am not sure the xp-120 was making good contact, it's so hulking huge I had to modify my northbridge fan to get it to fit at all. I have also definatly noticed a differance depending on how the AS5 gets put on, and that it does have a break in period..

Well...

About the only thing left to consider besides the AS breakin period is lapping.

I did a little reseach and found this site Lapping Kit
and went ahead and ordered. I first took a trip down to the local Home Depot but didn't have the 800 grit sandpaper or rubbing compound so for $6.49 and no shipping I figured what the heck. Just have to wait a few days till it gets here.

I swear as god as my witness I'm NOT going to let this thing kick my butt.......

Thanks to everyone for helping out....I'll keep ya posted...

*EDIT* - KRICKIES stevty2889 THAT is one hell of a system ya got going there....
My poor pitifull rig is only getting 44K on aquamark...thats it i'm not coming back here no more....I'm jealous......FAR to many nicer rigs then mine.......J/K

Slicker1: I have a similar setup to yours. P5P800 & P4 530J at 15% OC'd; with TT Jungle 512 & AS5. CPU Temps = 39*C to 44*C and both threads at 100% Doing SETI @home CLI. AS5 does get better as it cooks in; then in about 10 months it needs to be cleaned off and replaced with fresh !!
