It's an insult, derived from English archers who used to stick their fingers up at the French. If defeated, the French would cut the archer's fingers off so they couldn't use a bow again.

According to Wiki, there's not a lot of fact to support it but I remember being taught it in school!

This is one point when I'm left wondering about the wiki source. I can clearly remember being taught that in history class. Unfortunatly I can't think of any books that might help support that.
