OK, That suprised me....

I notice threads from time to time asking the Intel vs. AMD for crunching question.

I run AMD on my machines (see MyRigThingy) and a friend of mine just built an Intel system (P4PE w/P4 2.4 512 RDRAM all stock speed/volt I believe)

I crunch DF and persuaded him to do it also. Once he had it set up, I explained how to get a benchie using dfGUI.

the results surprised me! (totally unscientific test of one... YMMV)

I bench out at 6066 folds/hr. and his P4 benched at 5980?

I realize that DF is pretty heavily FPU dependent which leans towards AMD, but I really was expecting the P4 to be faster than me. I knew not to expect any
earth shattering differences since I am OC'd to nearly 2200+ PR, but.... was forced to realize all the P4 hype is fun.... but that's about it

So, again with my plea...... C'mon guyz... can we PLEASE get a real step up in CPU performance so I can do another upgrade

that doesn't surprise me

intel has a bunch of Ghz that doesn't seem to accomplish much

most of my DF production is on Intel boxen at work (Intel only shop) , it just doesn't stack up Ghz to Ghz

my 1.26 Ghz Pentium 3's do the same as the 1.8 GHz Pentium 4's in DF

with the P4 chip , they seemed to have figured out how to raise the cpu speed with out actually causing an increase in the amount of work the cpu does!!!

networkman, that would be JonB.

Insidious, you could always take networkman's approach and just dual 'em off. Rich, how many dualies do you have now, and what kinds? Dual AMD, dual P3, dual Xeon...?

dual 'em off
These are mainly Gaming machines (DF is just icing). Probably dualies are not my best answer... I'll be patient, we're overdue for some steps in tech.
Video is in the middle of one now (or at least, so we are told...)

I gotta go with FoBoT on this one.... GHz for GHz sake won't get my $$.

What really has me excited (aside from the Hammer family) is the announcement that there will be SocketA AthlonXP's with 400MHz FSB and 512kb of L2 cache. It sounds like that would need to be paired up with nForce2 or else KT400A. I'd think the extra cache would make it quite a terror in SETI or other clients that use large data sets.

Yeah, ya gotta believe that combo would pack a punch...

I guess everyone's getting socks for Christmas..... I'm going to save up!

I want to build a new machine, but waiting for the speeds to stabilize, like they did for a while 'bout 2 years ago! The wife has my old machine while I have my 1G laptop! Want to build another MP machine, but not many DC clients are MP capable like RC5 was. My Dual P2-450 server rocked for quite a while at RC5 providing about 30% of my total output!

bfour, if you stick XP on that dualie, you can install two instances of DF as services!

The readme1st.txt in the DF download tells how. (it's easy)

bfour, the Find-a-Drug DC client supports SMP. We'd love to have that dualie crunchin' for us, especially since we only have 2 people on the team. You can read moreabout it from THIS thread.

I smell an AMD thread !!!

I'm still running a T-Bird with SDRAM
Eventually, I'll move up to an XP with DDR and see how fast the big dogs run.

I've built some Intel based PCs for people, but don't use them for myself.

To answer mechBgon's question about dual cpu rigs.. believe it or not, I only have 2 of them currently. :Q They are a dual p3-450(IBM) and the dual p2-400 Xeon (2meg cache each). That's it - no other dual cpu machines; I sold many of 'em off to pay down the credit card bills, which will(after my upcoming tax return) be completely paid off.

This is not to say that I can't still add cpu power - indeed, I've got a bunch of stuff sitting here just waiting for ram.

LOL! Who are you, and what have you done with the REAL networkman?! :Q

I think the real NetworkMan sent all his stuff to LANMAN for the project. If NetworkMan and LANMAN get together, that makes what? A WideAreaLanMan?

I've got my 1.8A clocked at 2.61GHz@DDR387, in Windoze 98 it does about 5k/hour in Linux it does about 6.5k/hour. I didn't run the dfGUI bench (I keep forgetting to download dfGUI...), I just timed the results. My Dad's 1.1GHz Cellery (not sure whether is the 128k or 256k version) does about 3k/hour. The P4 is faster than XP at somethings, but FPU just isn't one of them. Btw, I'm also very excited at the prospect of a 512k, 400MHz FSB Barton Not that I'll likely have the need (or the money) to build a system based on one anytime soon.

uhm, in DC projects P4 are usually pretty slow, but then DC projects is not exactly the reason why most people buy a computer. They want to work on it (or play), and in some jobs (well, actually most) the P4 are simply faster. And, well, I don't care about the GHz, the performance is what counts and to me it seems that Intels aproach was right, and the high GHz ratings are a nice side effect (making the marketing guys jump around). Intel has no problems rising the speed of their CPUs... but AMD...

Btw: I guess HyperThreading might do a good job to the P4s DC performance... You could work and use the CPU alot doing work and still the CPU is working on lets say Folding@Home in the background at full speed as if nothing else was running... cool

On the topic of up-and-coming hardware in general, I found a tasty tidbit at The Inquirer. Try this on for size: a desktop AMD Athlon64 (Clawhammer) with 1Mb of L2 cache! :Q Sounds like a ripper. The system memory is sort of like a gigantic L3 cache, since the memory controller is on the CPU.

Surely it would be WANMEN?

Confused

Or is that what you lot are? But then you can't be confused, cos i'm confused Now i'm getting confused as to who's confused, which gets really confusing once i get confused as to who confused is. But now i'm confused, cos you are confused, but i'm actually confused, which is really confusing.

Make sense of that without getting confused
