Anandtech is probably THE biggest tech site on the net, annoying readers to this extent for a few extra dollars is despicable. There have been better forums for a long time, who'd have thought it would be Anandtech themselves that prompted readers to finally make the switch.

I agree totally maybe on the right side will be better since we read from left to right. Just move that thing!

WTF? You're insane. Tables are meant for displaying tabular data, but due to their properties were hijacked for layout. They're fvcking messy and a PITA!

i haqppen to like them for placing objects etc.. in.

ok what is a better way?

you definately know way more about coding so give ...whats better?

i am learning javascript but it's slow and very fussy about placement when using many instances lol

oh yeah, you're right, i am insane. lol

Tables are most compatible, as CSS does not play well with Netscape 4, and some websites feel that they can't alienate their very few visitors who are too stuck in a rut to upgrade to a decent browser such as Mozilla, but CSS is designed to lay out and apply every sort of formatting to elements on the page, while tables were designed for tabular data such as a financial worksheet or calendar.

The CSS example that I like to point out is this page from my personal site; no tables, no javascript, just plain ol' CSS. BBWF has a CSS-only website also, but his color scheme is ugly, IMHO.

Well, that's the problem. The only way to replicate their properties is to use CSS and display:table-cell, display:table, etc, but that won't fly in IE, because IE's CSS2 support sucks

Javascript is _not_ a method of webpage layout, and anyone that uses it as such should be shot

oh yeah, you're right, i am insane. lol
I know the feeling

It's been said that the ads can't be put on the top because of the current ads on the top. So what? It would anger fewer people if there were twice the number of ads on the top, as opposed to the current scheme.

Change your colors. It's easier to ignore blank areas when it's dark compared to the content.

I need "Speed" to keep from being distracted by something that draws the eye away? (Didn't know speed did that)

You seem a little invested (emotionally) in defending this ad placement. You work for Anandtech (Ads or Moderator)? Or for google? Just curious as to your motivation for trying to bully other members into agreeing with you that we should just "BE HAPPY" with this change.

I don't see what the big deal is. It was a bit of a surprise last night, but you just have to get used to it.

And what's this thing about putting them on the right? Would that make threads easier to read or something? Or just make it prettier?

Do you complain when other sites decide to change the way they arrange advertising? Do you threaten to never return to cnn.com when they change it?

<--used to go to cnn everyday...since they started charging to view videos it went from my 1st news source to my 4th or 5th

Wow. I get attacked for saying that the change isn't the most terrible thing ever to happen? For being the only person (or one of only a few) to not say that I'm invaluable to Anandtech and they should bow down to my desires or else I'll leave? I'm the one that thinks he's more important than I am in reality? I'm not the one saying I should get everything for free because I contribute.

I have nothing invested in this other than stating my opinions, just like everyone else in the thread. Who says that the people who don't like the ads are the only ones allowed to speak? When I'm the one complaining and everyone else is brownnosing, I'm the one that gets told to shut up. How is complaining about something for 7 pages any different from me saying I don't like something about the site?

I don't expect anybody to "be happy" about it. I just think everybody needs to give up complaining about it when it's not going to be changed, and stop threatening to leave the site and just DO it, so that maybe ad revenue will go down and you'll prove your point and things will change.

I actually didn't notice the ads. It doesn't bother me . Plus I'm only here at most a few minutes a day. I'm usually at that other Fat place.

Noticed the ad bar on the left and immediately came here to see what sort of backlash had happened, because I sure as hell was annoyed. Frankly, I'm surprised something hasn't been done already. To be honest, the small "Advertisement" at the top of the bar doesn't set the "ad" apart well enough. It looks more like an official endorsement, given the similarity of font.

This is precisely the thing that Zuni was trying to fix with the User names/posts/etc being in a horizontal bar in each post (as opposed to the bar on the left), just in a much grander scale.

As far as there already being banners up top... you've gotta be able to put another one up there. I don't mind looking at the things, but it's such a tremendous amount of wasted space, particularly when you're set to see 100 posts/threads per page.

Throw an optional "bar" into fusetalk under the navigation bar or something. For sites that choose to use it, you can have an ad banner in that space or (like IMG and PRE tags) just disable it.

I don't mind looking at ads.
I don't mind scrolling down through ads.
I do mind when an ad hijacks the flow of a site.

the placement on the side is terrible.. I run 1152x684 on a 19" monitor.....now I spend lots of time grabing the slid bar at the bottom so I can actually read the thread I'm trying to see.....lame

ack, this is brutal

i'd rather have double thick ads at the top...and i might be able to tolerate it on the right side

I would suggest that most of us feel a part of AT. We don't really feel like a part of those other sites.

Anand,
I'll tell you what. If you post in here that you are doing this because you need the money to keep the site going, I'll subscribe. In fact, I'll even pay for one other user who may need the help.
If your doing it just because you can, I'll remain a leecher. In any event, thanks for your effort.
Thank you and I look forward to hearing from you.

So you'll remain a leecher...so the ads aren't that bad, so they accomplish what they intend to, you're viewing the ads.

osage: are you viewing the pages in a maximized browser window? I rather think people who use varied size windows that result in scrollbars can't REALLY blame any page width issues on the site. The site is designed for a certain width, if you use less than that and it looks odd...

If you're not doing that, what browser are you using? The only way I can make scrollbars appear is with a window width of somewhere around 700.

Actually, I just ignore the ads no matter where they are. But thanks for your prompt reply, Anand.

No doubt, after 6 posts I think everyone is well aware of your position. Telling people to basicly shut up and like it will do little to make them look kindly upon your point of view.

How about placing the ads horizontaly under (or over) the section where page numbers for threads or forums are located?
