Just as people have the right to view free TV, record it on a VCR, and skip the commercials. I think its morally and legally perfectly OK for people to block such ads.

People need to remember that Anandtech has long since moved on from the Geocities free web page that it started on, its a business now. Consumers are under no obligation to insure that Anand continues to make a profit.. Its up to Anand to provide content people are willing to pay for.. People who block ads are unlikely to be buying from these businesses advertising anyway, so really there is no harm done. If Anand feels this is unacceptable, he should be offering up more "Services" in order to entice people to subscribe, or completely remove the free areas if he thinks he can survive doing that. How many subscribers do you think Anandtech would have if there were no free message boards? I don't think very many.. The content provided by people using the service for free probably far outweighs any advertising revenue that Anand makes from the ads.. ie, I would venture to say he has made more money off the content provided here for free by members (Through people subscribing because of that free content) than any Google ads.

Personally, I ignore the ads.. But the left side one IS annoying..

Nice post.

Tivo still receives the commercials, so that's okay, and it's legal to record TV for your personal use anyway. If you blocked the cable system from sending commercials to your TV, then that'd be stealing.

They make money off of people clicking on the ads. I would have never, ever, clicked on the ads. Me blocking the ads is undetectable to anandtech, both technology-wise, and revenue-wise. Not that I need to reassure myself morally, frankly I just don't care all that much. All I care about is the forums having a nice interface. If they don't, I will make them have one.

Undetectable? The ads don't get a hit when you load a page. That's detectable. They may not get simple view revenue anymore, but they can tell you aren't even seeing them.

Your "moralizing" is becoming annoying.

Do what you want to do and keep your own nose clean . . . don't worry about what others are doing . . . frankly it's none of your business.

Actually, I just bring up every possible side to an issue I can think of. I use Proxomitron too. Not everyone realizes the implications of doing things, and may change their mind once they do know.

Guess what, you can ignore me if you think I'm annoying. I've just as much right to remind people when something is illegal or less than ethical as you do to advocate it.

Well, then I guess I can also "call you" what everyone else in this thread is thinking - a whiner.

Nope, look back about 300 posts or so. :Q

I got USED to the damn ads and simply quit complaining or caring anymore - except to comment on "forum whiners" and/or wannabe "forum cops".

At least my insult was implied. Yours is right out there in the open. Too bad it's not a banning offense or worth a couple of weeks off.

I am considering asking the Mods to lock this as it has turned into your soapbox.

Yeah, I'm the one constantly repeating that the admins are bad and that we shouldn't have to look at ads on a free site.

In a way it's kind of funny reading through all this (and I didn't make it all the way to the end, just too long of a thread.) There's a collision of two different love/hates here at AT. Nearly all ATers love Google and most things affiliated with it, yet apparently some hate ads with an intensity that I thought (up until I saw this thread anyway) was reserved only for child molestors and terrorists judging by the intensity of some of these arguments. Step back, count to ten and breathe for a second folks. I can certainly understand being irritated that one of your favorite sites has instituted a design change that you don't like. And obviously everybody has a right and forum to voice their displeasure here. I've been hanging around these forums for years and have seen various changes which I did and didn't like. But from my perspective it's not as if these ads are suddenly rendering the forum completely inoperable or anything. Maybe it's a bit uglier aesthetically compared to what we've been used to, but if this placement helps offset the cost of managing the site (or even gives them a profit) I'm personally willing to accept it since I'm personally not willing to pay for the subscriber service - I have in the past, but I'm just not that heavy of a user of the extra features. My eyes have already gotten used to shifting just a little bit right to look at the main content. Heck I do that already for most of the sites I visit anyway.

The truth comes out. Lord Evermore is ACTUALLY former Turner Broadcasting CEO, Jamie Kellner!

network when you get the show is you're going to watch the

actually stealing the programming.

I'd like to see the contract I signed saying I must watch the commercials.. I must have forgotten about that.

The networks/cable companies/dish companies have no right to tell me what I can and can not do with their data stream once it enters my house...

I'm glad I'm the only one a bit annoyed with this... I believe docking the ad on the right would be less obtrusive.

The ads on the left are definitely annoying at the least. After I scroll down a bit, there's just a bunch of blank space on the left and it makes for more overall scrolling.

It means what it says. That's the easy solution to these stupid and annoying ads. Fat wallet doesn't have them.

I find it funny that anandtech has the word "fat wallet" when spelled without a space blocked.
