The first time I come back to this board in months, and this is what has happened. Why bother.

I guess Google now owns Anandtech and has the right to tell them where to place their ads. Now that's power.

Tell me it ain't so Joe, tell me it ain't so!

they don't. it is a test that they are trying. whoever used the "anandtech deals" avatar is misinformed or outright lying. I sure hope it is the former.

Is there a quick fix for Opera 7 or is there some way I can use the mozilla hack?

Could I trade the incredibly annoying side ads in for popups? Seriously on my laptop at 1027x768 it just kills the site. This won't make me click the ads, just circumvent the system.

btw Opera users:
Copy BBWF's code to the clipboard.
Paste it into notepad. Save the file as C:\Program Files\Opera7\Styles\user\NoAtAds.css
In opera go to File, Preferences, Page Style, and in the "My Stle Sheet" box paste in C:\Program Files\Opera7\Styles\user\noatads.css
Now click the button next to the address bar to apply your stule sheet. You loose some colors. But also the ads and you can read the site again.

If all you do is surf Anandtech, you could put Trillian, assuming you have it, on the left side, but not docked and choose to have it always on top.

It's not much of a solution though. I agree that I would rather have a popup.

Moralpanic,

This site is free but guess what?? Anandtech makes money off our loyalty. AT makes money because we like the site. If everyone gets feed up with this design it will lead to less money for AT.

You should really take a look at how much money they really make from it... you'd be surprise that it's a lot less than you think, and not something i would consider a profitable business. Maybe 2 years ago when banner ads were worth 5-10x as much as they are today it may have been profitable, but i'd bet they're just barely covering the free forum site with the banner ads.

Like i said, if your principles are so high, then just subscribe. Not only will you be making AT more money, but you'll have a faster site, more benefits... and no ads.

You're all hiding behind the word 'principle' because you're too cheap. There's no principle in whining about something that's already free. But there is principle in supporting something that you don't have to support.

I swear you just can't seem to understand.

Subscribing doesn't offer me anything. The speed is fine for me. The PM limit is fine with me. EVERYTHING is fine with me. I don't want to subscribe. I have no reason to subscribe.

Putting annoying ads on the page isn't the way to get me to subscribe. I will go to other FREE forums that value their visitors. Ad revenue may not make up that much money but Anandtech IS benefiting from the people that don't subscribe.

I have personally talked with Anand before. In the short conversation he expressed his gratitude for non-subscribers AND subscribers. Both makes this site what it is. Why alienate a majority of the people that visit?

Excellent point. Lets examine why everyobody has a pop-up killer. They don't like annoying intrusive ads. :;

For those of you who didnt understand why we had to move the banner.

Google no longer pays for banners that are "below the fold". This just means they do not give us any credit for banners that can be seen only by scrolling down. Unfortunately, this is a HUGE problem. The forums and site cost an extrodinary amount of money to maintain, and we have to take action in order to pay for bandwidth.

Thanks for everyone who understands, as you all know there are stressful times upon everyone.

Cheers,

Kristopher

Then put the ads at the top at the bottom and put the google ads at the top.....

Or put the damn thing on the right side.

Yeah, if they could go at the rightside it wouldn't be near as bad, as right now they only move the text more towards the center of the my monitor, which is currently a little on the blurry side Really need to rma it. Well, hopefully you can get something better worked out, if not, oh well, we will learn to live with it.

But keep in mind it may make other parts of fusetalk look funky. Haven't exactly tested it much yet.

LOL, it appears your user rating is 60.73 out of 10. That's about right, though, thanks for the code!

Why not place the ads in the left column (say, an ad under each username) hell its just text anyway. This looks wayy too small on 1024x768..

You guys seem to be a victim of your own success. I guess then it would be a good thing to move to other forums so you guys can afford to keep this site going. Less members, less expenses. I for one will do my part and move on just so you guys can continue on with this really nice place on the internet. I subscribed for a year the first time the servers mysteriously slowed down. Then I was promised a bunch of extras that never happened, so I did not want to renew until those promises were kept but kept coming here due to the knowledge of the membership. I'm still waiting for those extras. And now this kind of advertising. Next there will be ads right in the middle of your articles on the main page just like Yahoo does. Where will it stop? It won't. It's always the almighty buck that rules the roost in the end, even to the detriment of the original idea that made this site, which I think was the disbursement of computer knowledge, not advertising.
