A certain block of ads are served by pagead.googlesyndication.com

While getting rid of that doesn't fix the massive ugly problem it makes me feel better by know I'm know requesting it anymore

Now lets examine this:
"They may need to scroll to the right to see the ads... which would negate google's requirements. "

If right now I don't need to scroll to the right to read the posts, if I swap the place of the ads, why would I need to scroll all of a sudden.

You didn't rebut anything. You're just regurgitating the same thing over and over again, and it doesn't make a difference. I doubt they're going to put it to the right, because people will need to scroll to the right as well, so google probably wouldn't pay. The top already has ads, so i doubt they're going to add more up there. And of course they can't add it to the bottom, because google isn't paying for that.

It's simple... if you really like this site, and you have principle, which is what you guys are always claiming, then subscribe whether there are benefits are not. Now THAT'S called principle. Whining about something that is already free is not.

You don't even know what you're disputing. What's your point?
This is supposed to be an enthusiast site, but they're promoting one of the most intrusive forms of advertisement on the internet. I don't have a problem with some adds at the top or the bottom, but this is obstructive the viewing and use of the message board.
Like you said, there isn't any more room for adds on the top of the screen, OR the bottom.
Its full. I don't think we need the whole damn forum bordered with advertisements. This site was NOT founded on the premise of advertising, money, etc. This isn't geocities.

What do you mean "may"? The google ads are a fixed width and the rest of the horizontal content is fluid. It would fit to the size of the window. No scrolling.

What do you mean they offer nothing? They offer NO ADs. You're just a cheap bastard that's whining about something that's already free. Go find some other forum with the population of Anandtech that is free... most died a LONG time ago due to the cost of maintaining it.

So let me get this right....

I should pay $30 a year so that I don't see one ad on the left side of my screen? Yeah whatever.......

Don't expect this guy to reply with any type of logic.......

He will just tell you to stop whining.....I don't consider it whining when Anandtech makes money off me being a visitor. All I ask is a pleasant experience. Ads on the left side of the screen does not promote a friendly environment.

We are fvcking losing members and the people that run the site don't even care. Well you know what? Let it happen. Then AT doesn't make you any goddamn money. Hell, I subscribe and I never received my chatroom or any other exciting new features. Fvck it. Once this subscription runs out I am heading out.

Trust me, Anand cares. The assclowns that run the Anandtech Deals are fvcking up again. Just like they did with the whole Tigerdirect fiasco.

Google no longer pays for banners that are "below the fold". This just means they do not give us any credit for banners that can be seen only by scrolling down. Unfortunately, this is a HUGE problem. The forums and site cost an extrodinary amount of money to maintain, and we have to take action in order to pay for bandwidth.

Thanks for everyone who understands, as you all know there are stressful times upon everyone.

Well then they need to get Ad people that know their own ass from their elbow.

I just typed out a response to Moralpanic that was very similar to this. Then I deleted it as it would just be lost on him and not worth my time. Thanks for saying it for me.

What's soooooooo great about a chatroom? There is no way I would pay for a chatroom. Ever heard of IRC?

I just want what I paid for. No less. Secondly, IRC is not always fun. People act so petty and juvenile on IRC(10x worse than OT here). Now the AT channel in Undernet is awesome, but they actually have good Ops.

Google's text ads are the only type I don't bother to filter out. Even with it on the left, I won't filter them.

The number of companies advertised on the forums is pretty limited. Either Google pays so much money that AT isn't willing to give them up rather than piss off users, or there aren't any other advertisers willing to pay for adspace here that could make up for Google's pay.

I think they probably have figured out that people don't like it.

Nothing about a chatroom here would be any different than having a controlled channel on IRC, really. Occasional spamming maybe, but control over the people in the channel wouldn't be any different.

Jesus H. Christ.

Anandtech is contributing bandwidth, servers, and a place for 100,000 people to congregate and talk about anything and everything. Very importantly, many people are benefiting from the Hot Deals forum.

In other words, Anandtech is offering YOU, the user, a great service. For those of you complaining, what are YOU giving in return other than a bunch of slobbery-mouthed whining? Nothing.

I pay $2.50 a month for at least several hours' worth of time spent here every week.
For the occasional user, yes, I can understand how that might not be worth it. But for anyone who visits AT frequently, is $2.50 REALLY THAT MUCH TO PAY? No, it's not, no matter how you look at it. That's less than 9 cents per day.

If you can afford to take enough time here to whine and moan about AT's ads, you certainly can take the time to come up with nine goddamn pennies every day. Buy one less latte per month. Rent one less movie. Skip one combo meal.

It all comes down to priorities, not principle. Anandtech has to make money. It's not the March of Dimes. If you're not contributing to Anandtech, you're using up space and bandwidth and therefore the board has to make up that deficit by displaying an ad. Simple economics.

For those of you with 200 posts over two years, bitching and moaning about leaving the boards is not a concern of any of ours. You've obviously not contributed much if no one knows who you are, so good riddance. Leave the board to people who appreciate it for what it is.

too damn lazy to read 4 pages of replies, just came back to forums since this afternoon, these new ads blow donkey balls. I have to scroll to the right to read the enitre post. Then i saw the thread in OT that talks about no ads if you subscribe.........thinking this is a ploy to get more to subscribe, b/c there is no way in hell they really think that is good placement...

The AD itself is not the problem, which you seem to think. Did you ever hear anyone complain when it was on the bottom? In fact, I actually click on some of AT's ads, especially the ones from newegg.com, not only because theyre unobtrusive, but also because they offer something of interest. I may have also clicked on Google ads when they were at the bottom because of something interesting they advertised, but when the ads get more annoying than pop-ups themselves, then Ill avoid them like the plague. Probably not the effect that they're looking for, eh?

BTW, I was a subscriber for 3 months, but saw no reason to continue the subscription.

I subsribe myself, yet this lately development and the lack of new subscriber features is TOO much. I was willing to work through everything that AT has done, but this is over the line. Bad.
