Suck it up. I'm happily using battery packs in my 7d, 40d and some p&s camera. They will last several hundred shots per charge and can be charged a few hundred times.
My 40d is getting old, but the original battery packs from my 30d, which is several old, still charge.
I have tried high capacity AA's using the battery grip cartridge, and they only last a couple hundred shots.
Get over it.

I do like cameras with AA batteries so I can get replacement batteries easily, especially if I am oversea.

I don't mind when cameras come with their own proprietary batteries because I don't have any battery chargers at all.

I think the problem is that we need is a new battery standard... I imagine AA or AAAs are too big and clunky to fit into your small form factor mp3 players and digicams in this day and age. I never thought it made sense to make round batteries to begin with.

I'd like to see lithium batteries standardized. They have 10,000 variants of basically the same shape. I don't see why you'd need more than 6 sizes for portable devices.

Canon SX1-- series still uses AA's. Newly released model is the SX150. Nothing really new over the SX140, just more megapixels with the same sensor. What I hate is the megapixel war. If you can find a 140 on clearance go for it.

While I see the convenience of being able to just run to a store to grab some AA's, this problem could be avoided entirely by just planning ahead and having spare li-ion batteries on hand. I've never managed to run both my primary and backup li-ion battery for my Canon dry.

I get angry when I see a device large enough to use AA batteries that uses AAA batteries instead. More expensive, lower capacity, engineering FAIL.

Yep, and if you don't need video on the camera then the SX130 is a good one as well.

OP, it is possible your battery is degraded, try buying a new Li ion battery and you might see better results.

I don't see what the issue is, companies (attempt) to make their products towards what people will buy. Consumers are drawn to what they can compare for themselves. X camera is smaller than Y camera, so they prefer X. A camera has more "MPS" than B camera, so A is more popular. C camera has a larger screen than D camera, so C is the favorite. Companies try to make a camera smaller, with more "MPS", and with the largest screen possible. That means, good bye bulky AAs, quality glass, and optical viewfinders. Of course, those battery packs can also pad their margins so they can offer the camera for less but charge $50 for a much needed second battery.

It's getting harder to find 35mm film now, too.

Granted, digital cameras are everywhere now and good enough quality and convenient with loads of features, but there are still people like me who love film.

Luckily, I found out that my local Target still sells Kodak film, though they only had 2 packs left when I went there today.

I've used digital cameras and DSLRs for years, but I miss film photograhy, so last week I decided to find my old Pentax ZX-50. Looking forward to seeing how well Snapfish processes my film after I mail it in - they upload digital copies as well as mailing the prints and negatives back to you.

I haven't developed film myself since middle school Dark rooms were pretty cool. It always felt like magic seeing the image slowly appear in developer.

Thread title fail. AA size batteries are not being "phased out", they're being phased out of use in cameras.

I hate how companies use proprietary crap too. I can see the move to lithium, but there should be a standard. Same with phones and other devices. There should be maybe like 5 different standards and all companies should have to abide by those standards. Then again, who's going to make them do it? They're all out to make money so of course they'll make everything proprietary.

I hate laptop batteries. Way too many different designs even within the same company.

And even when there's an attempt to standardize, someone still wants to do their own thing.
