Ok, you print, but where?

Piggybacking off the Do You Print thread, where are you getting your prints done? I've been to the sites of Adoramapix, MPIX, and a few others and prices are pretty close for what I want right now, which is basic prints.

Any significant difference between their print quality, paper quality, customer service?

Who else is out there? I lean towards sites that cater to professionals. They tend to get to the point without a lot of fluffy upsell.

I tested three photos from three different locations ( adoramapix, mpix, snapfish ) along with a local Wal-Mart and Wal-Greens. All printed on whatever I deemed their default "matte" paper option at the time. I elected "no color correction" when the option was presented.

The local Wal-Greens was horrific. It looked low res, blotchy and the colors were blech. The paper even felt crappy.
The local Wal-Mart was passable. It looked reasonable, the colors were meh and the paper felt ok.

The Snapfish looked good. I remember liking the paper and colors, but the resolution looked ... off ?

mpix and adoramapix were mostly indistinguishable to me - there was a minor color preference for me from Adoramapix.
Based on these tests I did, when I print, if I don't have a coupon and/or if I care about the results, i'll choose Adoramapix.

Now, what paper and finish do you want... lol

Great info. Thank you. Ha, yea, whichever company I pick, I'll just start with their basic paper/finish. I might have one pic done in a bunch of finishes just to get a look at them.

Anyone else have experience with other companies?

Up here in Canada they all suck(Walmart, Costco, local shop) except Black's online but they're relatively expensive. If any know print from online store like snapfish, photobucket..etc please post a review.

For small prints, I generally use Walgreens and am happy with them. I found them to be equal to Costco and more convenient for me. Adormapix paper choices may be a better, but for normal prints I guess I don't really notice the difference - or care. For larger prints, or if I'm making a lot of prints to share, I generally use Adomapix and am happy. I guess I figure if I want a larger print or to share with family, which isn't too often, I'll pay a little more to make sure I'm getting top quality. But even then, I wasn't unhappy with Walgreens or Costco large prints. I used to try other places online, shutterfly, whatever. But I was unhappy at times and stopped using all online sites except Adoramapix. I think that for normal prints from local stores like Walgreens - it really depends on if they service the machine properly. I guess my store does a good job because they come out good.

For Calendars, I've used Costco and Walgreens, and found Costco to be quite a bit better. I've only printed a few books, but the Adomapix one is far superior to the other ones. The other ones were much less expensive but it shows. I made a nice mug at Walgreens which is much nicer than I expected - it came out great. I guess my finding is that it depends and there may not be a clear answer other than trying things out. But for books, which take a long time to make nicely, I intend to spend the money and use Adoramapix.

I've only used Adorama to print, mainly because I can go to their store and pick them up since it's located a subway stop from where I work.

I've mainly printed 11x14s and a few 16x19s on a few of their paper choices and have always been pretty satisfied with the results. I also check the boxes to make sure they don't alter the pictures in any way from what I uploaded.

I just printed 6 images via adoramapix and they were just fine. These were 3.5 x 5 and 4 x 6 prints, so nothing out of the ordinary. Reminded me of the prints I had made from film back before I went digital.

For big prints on canvas, metal, or glass, I grab groupons for these and have been wholly satisfied with the output.

Unsure if this is what you're looking for but I have a Canon Pixma Pro-100, so I print at home. They pretty much give these printers away. This very moment, Canon has a mail-in rebate that makes these $130. If you buy a camera with it, they'll give you one for free.

I love the prints I get out of it. I have my monitors calibrated and the prints I get out of this thing are damned close to what I see on-screen. Canon's luster paper is fantastic as well.

It's not hard to get codes for free prints from some of these places. I know I've gotten a ton of 10 free print emails from walgreens. Walgreens is where I usually print. Usually just small prints to mail to grandparents, etc. Not super critical. But as I said, try to get some free prints from various places, print the same 10 photos and compare the quality from each.

I use Costco for most things, because they publish color profiles for all of their printers. Because I also calibrate my monitors, the Costco prints look exactly like I want them to. https://www.drycreekphoto.com/icc/

The issue with Costco is their limited choice of papers. If I want more paper selections, I go to Adoramapix.

I am extremely fortunate to have a lab nearby that does excellent work for a reasonable price. The owner makes most of his living from photographing and printing the work of local painters (of which there are many, including his wife), but he serves the photographic community as well. I print 8x10s myself on my Canon, but anything bigger goes to him. His printers are just amazing.

The majority of my big prints are printed at BayPhoto. AdoramaPix is also good, and can do some sizes/aspect ratios that BayPhoto doesn't offer. I've also heard good things about mpix, but I haven't tried them yet.

Family shots go to Costco.
