Okay, I loathe the World Cup and soccer (football for the anal retentive out there)......

Seriously, think about it. Hockey fights usually suck because there's USUALLY just a lot of shirt pulling and falling down, but people eat it up becasue there's a good chance they'll see blood or someone go to the hospital.

That's why football (The real, American, NFL and collegiate kind) is so popular because it harkens back to the days of gladiators where it ruled because of violence and the likelyhood of death.

I don't know what all of the fuss is about over these two pansy's who were in the head butt incident of 06 and I really don't care for the details, I just think it's funny. I think it's funny that the only time so many Americans pay attention in numbers to the World Cup is when there's some violence at the core of it.

So I propose they just let em duke it out. Just throw down, bare knuckles, cleets in faces, no holds barred.

I know I'd watch more (or rather begin watching at all), that's for sure.

I find all televised sports boring, and more boring being present.

My stance on sports is that watching them is retarded, go out and play them yourself.

I do find soccor/football fun to play though, I just can't watch it on TV or sitting in a stadium watching others play.

They don't really allow it in hockey, you still get a penalty. What you are really proposing is that penalties in soccer are only for a short time.

Still more exciting to watch than tennis, golf, auto racing (except rally racing), and baseball.

If this is your theory, then why isn't Rugby bigger in the US.

Let the fans do all the fighting. They are pretty good at hand-to-hand combat, setting cars, trains, buses (and sometimes an entire stadium) ablaze, smashing windows and beating up the law enforcement. All the above are regularly televised, so I'm not complaining.

I like a great tennis match over a great hockey game. And even though hockey is exciting to watch, it is not because of the very occasional fight fight. At least not to me.

Soccer is difficult to watch if you don't understand the strategy. What it really needs is more goals. This can be accomplished by getting rid of the throw-in and making it a kick-in, getting rid of off-sides etc. Guess what.. thats indoor soccer.

Hockey allows fighting because each person has helmets and pads, they aren't likely to kill each other. Soccer players have cleats and very strong feet. They would kill each other.

I think soccer has enough fans already. They certainly aren't going to change fundamental aspects of the sport to appease an American audience.

I can understand not liking a sport but how can you "loathe" it? I have no interest in polo but I wouldn't say I "loathe" it. Though, after reading your post, it's pretty clear how. I am sure micahels and SpecOp007 would agree with you.

MisterJackson I believe you and I share similar beliefs in the great sport that soccer could become...should they choose to let us tweak a few minor inconveniences in the game.

Nothing could ever make me watch European "athletes" run back and forth on a field kicking a little ball. I mean, the game is hundreds of years old... can't they do something new for a change?
