I got a replacement laptop from dell. I used a hdd copy utility, and I have to re activate windows. It works fine. Then office asks to re-activate it. Now a MS rep just told me she cannot activate it due to her system (no further explanation) and that there is nothing she can do. I'm currently holding for a supervisor. I've been on hold for 11 minutes. Blech.

Supervisor told me that his system will not allow him to activate it. There is no reason why not. I left him my name and number, he's supposed to talk to his manager, who will be there in 30 minutes, about whether or not they can allow me to do this. WHAT A BUNCH OF B.S.

My version of Office 2003 doesn't require activation. On wait, that's my "backup" copy...

tell them that you hate having your company shop being bullied in this way. Hmm, didn't I just see this new RedHat class being offered...

apparently they are unable to verify my hardware ID. wtf ever that means. They said completely removing and reinstalling office will make it work fine. (they admitted this is THEIR problem, some mixup in their system)

Pretty sad when you have to download a crack just to use your legally purchased software.

That's why I have no M$ products newer than the year 2000.

Ditto.. Product Activation sucks ass. It may work the first time you ever have to activate anything, but what happens say five years from now?

forget 5. what about 10? I know at least 4 or 5 people that consistently live 10 years behind. A guy at my work uses a 486 w/ win 3.1, another has a pentium 75 w/ win95,

i dunno. bunch of crap.

Microsoft can bite me. I'll continue installing from my volume license CDs (Even when I purchase individual licenses)

They have no right to track my usage of a product that I paid for. I'm not fscking renting my OS.

Win2kPro has no activation and can be copied from hd to hd. In fact, my current Win2kPro install (legal copy) was initially done in July of 2002 (so it's about 17 months old) and has undergone I-don't-know-how-many-hardware changes but at least 4 hd changes (initial install on 40GB then to an 80GB to a different 80GB to a 200GB last week). All with no issues.

I've seen it at ThemeXP. Becareful when replacing your bootscreen though as you replace a core system file. And make sure you use the WinXP SP1 version if you have SP1 and the non-SP1 if you don't have SP1.

Just use stardocks little app it will copy the orignal and then replace the bitmap in the copy and if it won't bootup correctly you can switch back to the orignal copy.
