I have a problem.

this computer is a real budget computer making the jump from AGP to PCI-e. The parts are mostly new except as noted:
. Mid-tower Case
. 450 W Anteq Smart Power
. Aopen DVD/CD Drive
. Asus CD Drive

Egghead had a sale on the best part of the rest of the parts.

For budgetary purposes we were forced to contiue with using XP. It is by-the-way build 2600 (very early). I booted with the XP Prof. disk in the Aopen Drive and it installed perfectly. But, when windows came up there was no CD or DVD drive existing on the system. Where they go since the system read all the data from the DVD/CD drive in order to build the system. Of course, I have re-installed several times, but with the same results each time. Can one of you guys shed some light on my problem?

Jumpers, probably. For example, if both optical drives are on the same IDE cable, one needs the jumper set to Master, the other drive's jumper set to Slave.

When you build the new system you will have to perform a fresh install. I recomend you get a new PSU. Ageing PSUs are not good on a new system. A new system needs a new PSU.

While its true that an older psu doesnt put put as well as a newer one, I'm pretty sure his will do just fine.

Hi Guys: The PS is relatively new ( <>2 yrs), anyway. I have the DVD set to Master and the CD to Slave. That is why the Fresh Format and Install ran from the DVD/CD I expect. Neither one showed in the MY COMPUTER, however. That is why I am stuck. Why would it read all the set-up and then tell me I don't have a DVD/CD drive? :disgust:

Oh! BTW, the CMOS bios recognizes them correctly?

I guess you tried the cable select jumpers? If so, try swapping the drive cable. You could also try installing a Linux distro. If you have the same problem there you'll know it's most likely hardware. If Linux works, try slipstreaming all of the updates into XP, and installing from that.

MS Help and Support
CD drive or DVD drive is missing or is not recognized by Windows

Microsoft Windows XP

1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
3. In the navigation pane, locate and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
4. In the right pane, click UpperFilters.

Note You may also see an UpperFilters.bak registry entry. You do not have to remove that entry. Click UpperFilters only. If you do not see the UpperFilters registry entry, you still might have to remove the LowerFilters registry entry. To do this, go to step 7.

5. On the Edit menu, click Delete.
6. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
7. In the right pane, click LowerFilters.

Note If you do not see the LowerFilters registry entry, unfortunately this content cannot help you any further. Go to the "Next Steps" section for information about how you can find more solutions or more help on the Microsoft Web site.

8. On the Edit menu, click Delete.
9. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
10. Exit Registry Editor.
11. Restart the computer.

heyheybooboo:

Thanks for the good try. But, there were no filters present, upper or lower. I am not sure what that means? "Next Steps" include 'BEND OVER AND KISS YOUR ASS GOODBYE'. Was this instruction helpful? Yes!

tried OEM drivers (if available)? perhaps the drive was fine for the install but got bogus drivers loaded on the first windows start.

tried using only one drive on the middle of the cable? on the end?

installed mobo drivers? does the ide controller show up in device manager?

if they're newer drives and this is an old version of xp could it be a driver issue? are you able to get online and possibly download some sort of driver(CD ROM or motherboard specifically), or update windows? possibly try another drive, or one at a time. try the drives on another system just to verify they're still working ok. worst case buy another?

Well Guys:

I tried with just the CD/ROM attached and Voila when I reinstalled windows it worked there was the CD. However, when I tried to onstall the DVD it would not recognize it at all. This is the same drive I completely loaded windows from at least twice. Ant to top it off then the door became stuck and won't open. The ATI driver disk is DVD! I give up. It goes to the hospital Monday morning.

dvd drives are like 20 bucks. and you can get any needed drivers off the web, you shouldn't require any DVD's to get an XP PC running.

Are they SATA drives? Think you need to add drivers during the install if that's the case. Though I guess if you can install from the DVD drive, it's fine.
