I don't think he should be fired.
I can't think of any straight journalistic show on MSNBC. The other cable news channels have them, but I don't think MSNBC does, they need to change their rule.
I also agree with Spidey07, it's their money so they should be able to contribute if they wish. It's also their 1st amendment right to do.
I guess the real problem is he didn't follow the rules; he should have informed MSNBC of his intention to donate.
But to pretend that this somehow jeopardizes his, or MSNBC's, 'impartiality' is laughable.

That's not entirely true - they have chosen to be employees of the organization, and that adds some restrictions on their activities.
If Olbermann was they keynote speaker at a KKK rally and donated to them, it's easy to see how MSNBC would find that damaging to their business/image.
And if you start staying 'Democrat or Republican OK, KKK bad', then what about the tea party, or code pink, or the Green Party? How do you draw the lines?
As I said, I don't agree with prohibiting him from modest (his $2,400 donations) contributions, but it's within their rights, it seems, to have that rule.
