What components are you using your old heatsinks on? Just wondering if it's worth putting old processor heatsinks on soundcards, back of vid card, drives, etc.

Back of video cards: Worth it
Sound Cards: Not worth it
Hard Drives: Not worth it, fans preferable
That help?

you can, don't know how much good it would do though. sometimes a heatsink on the back of a video card can help, but thats only if it doesn't have good enough cooling at the front

Well some ideas would be, depending on what your heat sync looks like: Dremel it down to memory chip sizes and put the litte heat syncs on your video memory and system memory. You could upgrade your chipset cooling with a heat sync that has a fan. I personally don't feel that cooling the back of your video card is going to do very much. You would be better off taking the factory heat sync off and putting your old heat sync on the video card. (if you do that don't forget to lap your video processor) to attach most of these your going to have to make it perminant. Most people use metal epoxy that you can pick up at your local store. I don't personally know how effective an epoxy that has metal in it is but thats what is used. I have seen some epoxys designed for therminal conductivity but they were very expensive.

Just my $0.02

Well, my favourite way to attach heatsinks to the back of vid cards (specifically my V3-2000 @ 187) Is to cover the back of the card in electrical tape, except the area with a square high concentration of contacts directly behind the vid.chip. This area is then liberally plastered in NON-CONDUCTIVE thermal paste - the generic white stuff works fine here. The heatsink is then glued to the electrical tape. This prevents the card being unrecoverably modified in any way, but provides good heat transfer...The best reason to do this is if you own a vid card which is not memory-bandwidth limited - mostly older 3D cards - with the newer NVidia Geforce2's, there is hardly any point in overclocking the GPU.

I only put a heatsink on the back of my Voodoo3 because I needed the slot below the AGP slot, and therefore only the stock heatsink would fit on the frontside of the card, and that is hardly the most impressive heatsink in the world..
